Proven success in driving EPC/RFID
initiatives in Hong Kong
As an important part of its industry commitment to drive
the development of EPC/RFID in Hong Kong, GS1 Hong
Kong rolled out a two-year EPC network project, which
started in 2005 and completed in March 2007, resulting in
the establishment of an EPC-standard based infrastructure
system – The Hong Kong EPCnetwork, as well as the
completion of four multi-industry RFID pilots participated
by users from the retail, logistics and manufacturing sectors,
using the Hong Kong EPCnetwork as their conduit to access
real-time, accurate data about their goods throughout the
supply chain. The results of the
project are encouraging, with
some manufacturers having
reported an increase of 60% in
productivity.
Furthermore, GS1 Hong
Kong, in collaboration with
the Hong Kong Science
Technology Parks Corporation
(HKSTP) and other key leading
companies representing the
technology, logistic services
and retail sectors, launched
the Supply Chain Innovation
Centre (SCIC) in February
2007, providing the necessary
infrastructure and environment
to nurture the development of
integrated RFID application in
the supply chain to accelerate
the adoption of this enabling
technology by Hong Kong
and PRD enterprises. Since its
establishment, the SCIC has been providing professional
consultancy on supply chain management and knowledge
transfer through demonstrations of EPC/RFID at work
and training programs, attracting over 2,500 local and
international business visitors to date.
In addition, GS1 Hong Kong signed the Guangdong-Hong
Kong RFID Industry Cooperation Memorandum with the
Foshan Chancheng District Government in June last year,
helping enterprises in the PRD to improve their supply
chain management and operational efficiency through the
adoption of RFID and ultimately enhancing the region’s
competitiveness in the global market.

RFID initiatives have been gaining positive results.

EPC/RFID technology to a wider field to achieve supply
According to a latest Gartner
research on the global RFID supply
chain trends, the world’s total
RFID market revenue in 2008 is
expected to reach nearly US$1.2
billion and will grow three-folds to
reach US$3.5 billion by year 2012.
This only indicates that the industry
is now on the brink of the most
exciting phase of RFID development.

香 港 成 功 推 動 EPC/RFID 項 目
香 港 貨 品 編 碼 協 會 於 2005 年 推 出 為 期 兩 年 的 EPC 網 絡 項 目 , 乃
推 動 香 港 業 界 實 施 EPC/RFID 的 重 要 項 目 之 一 , 該 項 目 於 2007 年
3 月 完 成 , 成 功 建 立 一 套 以 EPC 標 準 為 基 礎 的 基 建 設 施 ―「 香 港
EPC 網 絡 」(Hong Kong EPCnetwork) 以 及 完 成 四 項 跨 行 業 的
RFID 試 點 計 劃 。 當 中 參 與 的 企 業 分 別 來 自 零 售 、 物 流 及 製 造 行
業 , 他 們 運 用 「 香 港 EPC 網 絡 」 作 為 共 用 交 換 資 訊 的 管 道 , 讓 各
參 與 計 劃 的 供 應 鏈 夥 伴 能 夠 實 時 及 準 確 地 獲 取 有 關 貨 物 在 全
球 供 應 鏈 上 的 資 訊 流 向 。 上 述 項 目 的 成 果 令 人 鼓 舞 , 部 分 製 造
商 表 示 其 生 產 力 提 升 60%。
香 港 貨 品 編 碼 協 會 與 香 港 科 技 園 公 司
( 香 港 科 技 園 ) 以 及 其 他 來 自 科 技 、
物 流 服 務 和 零 售 界 別 的 大 型 企 業 , 於
2007 年 2 月 攜 手 合 作 成 立 「 供 應 鏈 創 科
中 心 」(Supply Chain Innovation Centre -
SCIC)。 該 中 心 提 供 一 個 合 適 的 基 建 及
環 境 , 讓 整 合 的 RFID 解 決 方 案 得 以 迅
速 發 展 , 從 而 推 動 香 港 及 珠 三 角 洲 的
企 業 在 供 應 鏈 管 理 上 , 加 快 採 納 該 項
應 用 技 術 。 供 應 鏈 創 科 中 心 自 成 立 以
來 , 一 直 為 業 界 提 供 供 應 鏈 管 理 的 專
業 顧 問 服 務 , 並 透 過 展 示 EPC/RFID 於
實 際 商 業 環 境 中 的 運 作 情 況 以 及 培 訓
課 程 , 達 至 知 識 轉 移 ; 至 今 該 中 心 已 吸
引 超 過 2,500 名 本 地 及 海 外 商 界 人 仕 參
觀 有 關 設 施 。
此 外 , 香 港 貨 品 編 碼 協 會 與 佛 山 市 禪 城 區 人 民 政 府 於 去 年 6 月
簽 訂 《 粵 港 RFID 產 業 合 作 備 忘 錄 》, 以 幫 助 珠 三 角 洲 的 企 業 透
過 採 納 RFID, 提 升 供 應 鏈 管 理 及 營 運 效 能 , 從 而 加 強 該 區 的 全
球 市 場 競 爭 力 。
