OT 700-702 Exegesis of Old Testament Books<br />

Prerequisite: OT 501<br />
An exegetical and theological study of selected books of the Old Testament.<br />
These will be offered in response to the demands and requirements of<br />
individual students.<br />
OT 703 Exegetical Hebrew III<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisites: OT 500 and OT 501<br />
This course builds on language skills developed in Exegetical Hebrew I and II<br />
with a view to facilitating their ongoing implementation in personal and<br />
pastoral/professional study of Scripture. Students will consolidate proficiency<br />
in abilities such as analyzing and critiquing translations, conducting word<br />
studies, gathering language-based insights from Scripture, and completing<br />
exegetical outlines in preparation for teaching or preaching. Passages selected<br />
for study revolve around a central theme which may vary from year to year.<br />
Representatives from Practical Theology and Biblical Studies Departments<br />
share development and instruction of this course.<br />
OT 704-725 Exegesis of Old Testament Books<br />

Prerequisite: OT 501<br />
An exegetical and theological study of selected books of the Old Testament.<br />
These will be offered in response to the demands and requirements of<br />
individual students.<br />
OT 731 Exegesis of Selected Passages<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisite: OT 501<br />
This course is designed to introduce the student to particular aspects of Hebrew<br />
language and thought as they are reflected in the diversity of genres that<br />
represent the Old Testament. Passages from an array of genres will be selected<br />
(e.g. law, narrative, wisdom) in order to acquaint the students with aspects of<br />
exegesis that are distinctive of each.<br />
OT 732 Advanced Hebrew Grammar<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisite: OT 501<br />
A deductive study of an assortment of Hebrew grammatical works, both<br />
traditional and descriptive.<br />
OT 740 Biblical Aramaic<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisite: OT 501 or equivalent<br />
A grammatical and exegetical study of the Aramaic portions of the Old<br />
Testament, Daniel, Ezra and the glosses in Genesis and Jeremiah.<br />
OT 742 Introductory Akkadian<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisite: OT 501 or permission of instructor<br />
An introduction to the grammar, vocabulary and writing system of the best<br />
documented of the ancient Semitic languages. Selected texts in the NeoAssyrian<br />
script will be read. Offered on demand or by directed study.<br />
OT 744 Introductory Ugaritic<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisite: OT 501 or permission of instructor<br />
An introduction to the vocabulary and grammar of this language which is so<br />
important for understanding the religio-cultural environment of biblical Israel.<br />
Offered on demand or by directed study.<br />
OT 746 Northwest Semitic Inscriptions<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisite: OT 501 or permission of instructor<br />
An introduction to the writing, grammar and contents of texts from the Old<br />
Testament period which are found outside the Bible. The study could include<br />
seals, letters, stamps, weights and inscriptions in Hebrew and Moabite which<br />
illuminate biblical history and theology.<br />
OT 748 Hebrew Pedagogy<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisite: one year of Hebrew plus permission of Department Chairperson<br />
A survey of Hebrew pedagogical method to develop an understanding of<br />
teaching a non-living language. In light of this theoretical base, the student will<br />
evaluate current Hebrew grammars, while participating in the Hebrew teaching<br />
process.<br />
OT 749 Words and Meanings: Lexical Semantics<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisite: one year of Hebrew<br />
An analysis of the theory of meaning as well as methods of determining<br />
meaning from a text without the use of native informants. This is a study of<br />
what words mean and how we determine that meaning.<br />
OT 750 Septuagintal Studies<br />
4 hours<br />
Prerequisites: OT 501 and NT 501<br />
This course will survey the textual traditions underlying the Greek text of the<br />
Old Testament. Reference will also be made to the corresponding Hebrew text.<br />
Portions of scripture will be read in the original. A survey of the extrabiblical<br />
literature of the intertestamental period will also be presented.<br />
OT 770-779 Conference/Seminar<br />
2-4 hours<br />
Credit is available for those who attend approved conferences and seminars.<br />
Students should check with the chairperson of the respective department<br />
