Annexure to Directors’ Report<br />

Information under section 217(1)(e) of the Companies Act, 1956 read with Companies (Disclosure of particulars in the Report of Board of Directors) Rules, 1988 and forming<br />

part of the Directors’ Report for the year ended 31 st March, 2000.<br />

A. CONSERVATION OF ENERGY<br />

• Reengineering of solid core Insulators design resulting in<br />

a) Energy conservation measures taken :<br />

reduction of weight at Insulator.<br />

• Development of Woollen knitting yarn using “Finest Micron<br />

Wool” at Textiles.<br />

• On farm trial in cultivation of flax fibre in India at Textiles.<br />

• Use of high Alkali Pyro Phillite, Telsite and MDS Grade / HT-10<br />

Grade low Soda Alumina for development of HVDC Insulators.<br />

2. Benefits derived as a result of the above R & D:<br />

• Improvement in the Quality of product, production efficiency<br />

at low cost and development of new range of products and<br />

new markets and improved customer satisfaction.<br />

3. Future Plan of action<br />

• Improvement in quality of products and process, achievement<br />

of a better product mix, development of new application of<br />

products, development of new products and reduction of cost.<br />

4. R & D Expenditure :<br />

Capital Expenditure : Rs. 20.00 lacs<br />

Recurring Expenditure : Rs. 44.46 lacs<br />

Percentage of Turnover : 0.05%<br />

5. Technology absorption, adaptation and innovation:<br />

i) Efforts in brief, made towards technology absorption,<br />

adaptation and innovation:<br />

• Development of Coning Machines, including better<br />

design at Rayon.<br />

• Incorporation of in-house reactor design and latest<br />

dryer design at Carbon Black.<br />

• Compressed firing cycle (10 to 18 hours per cycle in all<br />

Kilns) resulting in increased loading capacity & fuel<br />

efficiency at Insulator.<br />

• Reengineering of metal hardware design to achieve<br />

saving of Rs.2.3 Lacs / month at Insulator.<br />

• Use of C9 in place of SKO and LDO in place HSD in<br />

Thermopack for cost saving at Insulator.<br />

• Installation of Ultra Filter on compress air line at<br />

Textiles.<br />

• Inter connection between Cooling Towers and<br />

Humidification Plant at Textiles.<br />

• Development of Dyeable Package on T.F.O. Machine to<br />

offer value-added products in export market at Textiles.<br />

• Replacement of single speed motor by double speed motor in<br />

Viscose Dissolver at Rayon.<br />

• Use of Light Diesel Oil (LDO) in place of High Speed Diesel<br />

(HSD) in the DG Sets at Rayon.<br />

• Installation of additional inverter / supermizer in process<br />

pumps of Caustic Soda.<br />

• Installation of 900 0 Air Preheater to decrease fuel consumption<br />

and enrichment of tail gases at Carbon Black.<br />

• Substitution of CBFS in place of LSHS as fuel oil in Carbon<br />

Black.<br />

• PGF timer replaced to reduce instair consumption saving 30<br />

KWH/hr at Carbon Black.<br />

• Motor driver agitator replaced with air agitator saving 4 KWH/<br />

hr at Carbon Black.<br />

• Modification of firing cycle resulted in saving of 2329 KWH/<br />

month at Insulator.<br />

• Optimisation of loading of motors in worsted spinning at<br />

Textiles.<br />

• Elimination of Indirect Cooling Humidifier at Textiles.<br />

• Use of Cooling Tower water in Air Washery in place of<br />

chilled water for 5 months in a year at Textiles.<br />

• Stopping of 75 HP ELGI Compressor by full loading of ZR-4<br />

compressor at Textiles.<br />

• Stopage of Chiller Plant by modification of Humidification<br />

Plant & Cooling Tower at Textiles.<br />

b) Additional Investments & Proposals, if any, being implemented for<br />

reduction of consumption of Energy.<br />

• Use of Extraction-II Steam of Power Plant Turbine in<br />

Continuous Spinning Machines at Rayon.<br />

• Use of Electroflow Energy Saving Systems in Power Plant Load<br />

Centres at Rayon.<br />

• Replacement of 6.0 MW Turbine’s Rotor at Carbon Black.<br />

• Seasonsal variation with inverter drive in Humidification at<br />

Textiles.<br />

• Heat Recovery Unit in Dye House at Textiles.<br />

• To invest in Inverter Drive System for Auto Coner machines at<br />

Textiles.<br />

c) Impact of measures listed at (a) and (b) for reduction of energy<br />

consumption and consequent impact on the cost of production of<br />

goods:<br />

The above measures have resulted/will result in energy saving in<br />

the consumption of fuel and power and consequent decrease in the<br />

cost of production.<br />

d) Total Energy Consumption and Energy Consumption per Unit of<br />

Production as per prescribed Form – A :<br />

B. TECHNOLOGY ABSORPTION<br />

Efforts made in technology consumption (Form – B)<br />

RESEARCH <strong>AND</strong> DEVELOPMENT<br />

1. Specific areas in which R & D carried out by the Company.<br />

• Replacement of Zinc by Alum for Spinbath at Rayon.<br />

• Use of purged lean Brine of Caustic Soda Plant in water<br />

softeners at Rayon.<br />

• Developing new grades at Carbon Black and to carry out all<br />

requisite test for quality control.<br />

• Development of 210 KN and 300 KN Disc Insulators high end<br />

products at Insulator.<br />

Germany for manufacture of Caustic Soda.<br />

• Caustic Flaking Technology from M/s. Bertrams,<br />

Switzerland.<br />

• Continuous Spinning Technology from M/s. Snia<br />

Engineering, Italy for Continuous Viscose Filament Yarn.<br />

• Airjet Spinning Machines from Japan, Autoconer from<br />

Italy and Japan, Hara Cherry Draw Frame from Japan<br />

and Cross Roll Cards from U.K. at Textiles.<br />

C. FOREIGN EXCHANGE EARNING <strong>AND</strong> OUTGO<br />

The information on foreign exchange earnings and outgo is contained in<br />

Note No. 20a and the annexure thereto.<br />
