Recommendation 8: The Tom Price and Onslow Visitor Information Centres to prepare<br />

respective business and local promotional plans to guide the management <strong>of</strong> their visitor<br />

servicing operations and to be reviewed annually.<br />

Recommendation 2: Management <strong>of</strong> the Tom Price Visitor Centre to focus upon<br />

improving gross margins across all souvenir and merchandising lines with the aim <strong>of</strong><br />

achieving an average sale markup <strong>of</strong> at least 60% on cost <strong>of</strong> goods purchased.<br />

Recommendation 3: Management <strong>of</strong> the Tom Price Visitor Centre to encourage more<br />

investment in local tourist accommodation capacity and once achieved investigate<br />

opportunity to establish an effective accommodation booking service.<br />

Recommendation 4: Management <strong>of</strong> the Tom Price Visitor Centre to closely monitor<br />

visitation level across months to determine any changes in tourist seasonality and alter<br />

Visitor Centre opening hours if required to meet these needs. The long term goal should<br />

be to operate the Tom Price Visitor Centre on a 7 day per week basis all year round.<br />

Recommendation 6: Management <strong>of</strong> the Onslow Visitor Centre to supply the <strong>Shire</strong> with a<br />

regular reporting mechanism. Reflecting the Centre’s opening times it is suggested two<br />

reports per visitor season (the first in April at the beginning <strong>of</strong> the season outlining future<br />

direction, operational goals and planned activity, and the second at the end <strong>of</strong> the season<br />

in October reporting on previous 7 month performance). This reporting format is not<br />

considered too onerous on Centre management/committee as this should already be<br />

undertaken for the Committee’s own planning and monitoring purposes.<br />

Recommendation 10: The <strong>Shire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ashburton</strong> should install new visitor information<br />

panels at current roadside information bay near entrance to Pannawonica town and<br />

incorporate any new destination branding where appropriate.<br />

Recommendation 11: The <strong>Shire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ashburton</strong> should work with Main Roads WA to<br />

relocate current roadside information bay to Onslow turn<strong>of</strong>f T junction and install a new<br />

Onslow entry statement at the same location.<br />

Recommendation 12: The <strong>Shire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ashburton</strong> should install a new Onslow town entry<br />

statement along with a roadside bay, shelter and information and interpretive panels<br />

with consistent Onslow branding.<br />

range <strong>of</strong> basic services (information, toilets, waste dump, blackwater dump, vehicle wash<br />

down).<br />
