distribution of dextral and sinistral senses of motion. Rare sets of conjugate extensional shear bands are also observed throughout the domain. Additionally throughout this domain, brittle structures and lower-temperature solid-state deformation overprint the ductilly deformed high-strain gneiss. Brittle structures include normal faulting and cataclastic deformation of ductilly deformed gneiss and leucogranite dykes and injection of pseudotachylite across weakly cataclastic foliation (Fig. 2.8a,b,c). Solid-state deformation includes the development of centimeter-wide mylonitic to ultramylonitic layers that cut obliquely across high-strain gneiss (Fig. 2.8d). 2.4.2.6 Domain VI – Migmatitic GHS The migmatitic GHS is the northernmost and structurally lowest domain mapped (Figs. 2.3, 2.7e,f). The domain consists of migmatitic quartzofeldspathic gneiss (Fsp + Qtz + Bt + Ms ± Grt ± Tur ± Sil) with up to 70 vol% leucosome. The mineralogy of the migmatitic GHS is similar to the overlying high-strain gneissic GHS; however, the modal abundance of muscovite and leucosome, and intensity of strain are markedly different. Sillimanite, in the form of fibrolite, is rare and anastomoses around clusters of quartz and feldspar. Garnets are inclusion-rich and intensely fractured, but not in a systematic orientation. Rare muscovite grains amidst dynamically recrystallized quartz and feldspar show irregular grain boundaries, suggestive of non-equilibrium conditions. Quartz and feldspar grains are equigranular and show interlobate grain boundaries (Fig. 2.7e). This indicates recrystallization via grain boundary migration, which is associated with temperatures of deformation between ~500-700°C (Stipp et al., 2002). Additionally, quartz displays chessboard extinction (Fig. 2.7f), thought to represent a combination of slip along the basal and prism lattice planes (Blumenfeld et 33
