NAU MAI, HAERE MAI
Welcome to Massey University in 2013.
We are New Zealand’s only truly national university. We
have modern campuses in Auckland, Palmerston North and
Wellington, as well as the country’s most comprehensive
TYPES OF
ACCOMMODATION
NGĀ MOMO WĀHI NOHŌ
We know that after choosing what subjects you’ll study
at Massey University, your next most important choice is
where you’ll live.
You have a range of accommodation options at our three
campuses, including Halls of Residence, residential
complexes, apartments, units, and homestays. These are
managed either by the university or an agent of Massey.
You may also decide to stay in private accommodation.
Our experienced Accommodation Services staff can help
you to choose the type of accommodation that’s right for
you, as well as give you all the advice you’ll need to make
that decision.
Here’s an overview of our accommodation options:
MASSEY HALLS OF RESIDENCE
You live in your own room within a hall.
Halls usually house up to 100 students.
They are managed by residential accommodation
staff, who establish guidelines for living, monitor the
community environments, offer support and arrange
activities.
Usually located close to, or on, campus.
Halls may or may not provide meals for residents.
You don’t need to worry about paying lots of different
bills or, in some halls, cooking meals.
Excellent facilities including computer rooms.
Single-sex and co-ed options.
A great place to meet people and make friends.
It’s a close-knit environment with people your own
age.
Alcohol free options.
APARTMENTS OR UNITS MANAGED BY
MASSEY
You have your own rooms in a managed apartment or
unit.
They are managed by residential accommodation
staff who establish guidelines for living and offer
support to residents.
In most apartments and units you’ll need to organise
your own meals and pay bills.
A good mix – you get the independence of a unit plus
support from residential accommodation staff.
A smaller and more intimate living environment with
people your own age.
ACCOMMODATION | 2013 GUIDE ON WHERE TO LIVE
RESIDENTIAL COMPLEXES
You live in your own room within a complex.
Complexes vary in size, but usually house between
100 and 300 students.
Complexes do not provide meals for residents.
There are single-sex and co-ed options.
The complexes are usually close to campus.
You are with a larger community of people your own
age.
HOMESTAY
Homestay accommodation is available to any student
studying at Massey. All international students
under 18 years of age must live in Massey approved
homestay accommodation.
Homestay students have their own room in a family
home. Some families have more than one student
staying with them.
Homestays give international students a chance to
directly experience New Zealand life, culture and
language.
Massey Homestay Advisers can help students find a
family with similar interests.
Homestay accommodation is offered in most areas of
the campus cities.
ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS FOR UNDER 18
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
All international students under the age of 18 must be living
in one of the following three categories of accommodation:
Massey University Approved Homestay
Accommodation.
Massey University Approved Designated Caregiver
Accommodation.
Living with Parents.
PRIVATE FLATS
After their first year, many students choose to move
into private flats with other people.
Private flats provide independence for students,
but there is a lot more to organise than with other
accommodation options.
You and your flatmates are responsible for your own
grocery shopping, meals, rental agreements and
payments, bill payments, budgets and relationships
within the flat.
While Massey does not take responsibility for
problems you may have with private accommodation,
our Accommodation Services staff will give you
advice and support as required.
Most flats in New Zealand are rented out
unfurnished. If you move into a flat with flatmates, you
may have to purchase furniture for the flat and your
own bedroom.

ALBANY / ŌTEHĀ CAMPUS
THE INNOVATION CAMPUS
Massey University’s innovative Albany /
Ōtehā campus is located on the North Shore
of New Zealand’s largest city – Auckland.
Home to around 1.4 million people, Auckland
is a fast-paced international city. Built
around a beautiful harbour and surrounded
by sea, the City connects to the North Shore
by a multi-lane harbour bridge. The North
Shore is thriving. It’s the fastest growing part
of Auckland – a hub of business and
recreation.
The Albany campus was established more
than 18 years ago in one of the North
Shore’s fastest growing areas.
The campus grounds are peaceful with
many native trees and plants, yet it’s only a
five minute walk to the expansive Westfield
shopping centre with its movie theatres,
shops, restaurants and numerous fast food
outlets. If you want to travel further, there
are buses running regular routes around the
North Shore region and into Auckland city.

The modern campus has top-quality facilities including
a five-storey library, modern lecture theatre blocks and
study rooms, a new Student Central building (opened in
2012), a state-of-the-art recreation centre, cafés, a student
common room and a popular student bar. If you have a car,
there’s a large student carpark right in front of the campus,
and it's free.
Our staff and the Albany Students’ Association work
together to provide entertainment and social events
throughout the year. Groups of students meet up for all
sorts of reasons – sporting and cultural events, day and
weekend trips, and socialising at the student bar.
On the learning side, the campus has some nationallyrecognised
areas of focus, including information systems,
design and engineering, applied social sciences and
financial analysis. The strength of Albany's postgraduate
and research programmes is underpinned by its role as
the home of both the New Zealand Institute for Advanced
Study, where world-renowned scientists collaborate to
produce advances in knowledge and The Allan Wilson
Centre for Molecular Ecology and Evolution, a governmentdesignated
Centre of Research Excellence. The campus is
MANAWATŪ CAMPUS
GET CONNECTED
The Manawatū campus, located in
Palmerston North, has the benefit of both
age and youth on its side.
It’s where Massey began over 80 years ago
– the original campus, yet it is part of
‘Student City’, one of New Zealand’s most
youthful cities, with nearly half the
population under the age of 25.
Palmerston North is great for students, with
a reasonable cost of living including
sensibly priced accommodation. It is easy to
get around whether you like to walk, hire a
green bike or as a Massey Manawatū
student you can hop on a bus, for free,
anywhere, anytime.
There’s also a huge range of sporting and
social activities right on your doorstep or in
the surrounding countryside. Try kayaking,
rafting, mountain biking, skiing or tramping
to name but a few. If the outdoors doesn’t do
it for you, there are lots of other activities
and clubs.

MANAWATŪ CAMPUS
The campus has two locations, Turitea – renowned for
its beautiful park-like setting of trees and gardens, and
Hokowhitu – on the city-side of the Manawatū River,
near the lagoon. Turitea is a hub of student activity with a
student centre, food hall and shops.
The Manawatu campus offers a full range of qualifications
from science, business, food technology, humanities &
social sciences, to engineering, education and technology.
It is home to New Zealand's only veterinary science
programme and the only university-based aviation school.
The campus focuses on providing a community where
students are supported while they study. Massey
Manawatū offers a wide range of on-campus halls and
units, catering for nearly 1000 students of diverse ages,
programmes of study and cultural backgrounds.
Each Hall of Residence or unit has a live-in Residential
Adviser. This adviser provides help and guidance if you
need it. They also help to arrange activities for the halls.
Living on campus also means that you have easy access to
a range of facilities such as a prize-winning gym, the Sport
& Rugby Institute, an equestrian centre, the community
athletics track, cafés, the library and computer labs. The
Library Information Commons is also a popular place to
meet people, have a coffee and do some study.
The Dining Hall/Food Court serves a wide variety of meals
throughout the day. There is flexibility on when these meals
are taken, so ask about the “meal swaps” that let you
collect your dinner at lunch time.
Residents of halls and units are well known for their interhall
competing and socialising. There are a number of
competitions throughout the year, including a crazy sports
day, quiz night, and a touch rugby tournament. Social
events include barbeques, an Easter Egg Hunt and the
Residents’ Ball.
It’s a unique community where you can live in top
accommodation and have a great social and study life.
“THE THING ABOUT THE MANAWATU
HAVE A LIFE WHILE YOU STUDY.
converted to single-sex halls, though they operate as
one. Each hall has large verandahs, so there is plenty of
opportunity to take in the views and soak up the sun.
Framed by a row of Palmerston North’s iconic Phoenix
palms, Moginie Hall has a park-like lawn setting that
borders onto the wide open spaces of Massey’s farmlands.
It has an alcohol-free policy, which means you are not
permitted to consume alcohol on the premises.
Named after the Manawatū region’s mountain ranges,
Tararua and Ruahine are modern blocks each comprising
four six-person apartments, ideally suited for our mature
students. Each apartment is completely self-contained, but
there are many opportunities for the community to socialise
Walter Dyer is our largest hall, yet it is still a close and
THE COURTS
THE COURTS IS A GROUP OF HALLS OF RESIDENCE
POPULAR FOR THEIR CENTRALISED COURTYARDS.
SITUATED ABOVE THE LOVELY VALLEY THAT IS HOME
TO THE TIRITEA STREAM, AND ALONGSIDE THE SPORTS
FIELDS AND RECREATION CENTRE, THE COURTS PROVIDE
PLENTY OF MOTIVATION TO KEEP FIT, WHILE STILL BEING
ONLY A SHORT WALK TO THE HEART OF THE CAMPUS.
City and Egmont Courts are catered halls. They are set
up in six-person units called pods within a larger hall
structure. Rotary and Kairanga Courts are self-catered
halls set up in four-person pods, each with their own
kitchenette. Laundry facilities are provided.
The rooms are compact, but you might be surprised to
learn they have the same amount of built-in furniture as all
the other halls. Each hall has a central common room and
courtyard, with City and Egmont also having large kitchen
blocks. There are lots of places to socialise, making the
Courts amongst the friendliest of halls on campus.
HOMESTAY
Homestay accommodation is when a student lives with
a local family in the family’s home. Homestay is popular
Zealand culture in a safe and supportive environment.
All international students under 18 years must stay in a
homestay. All Massey approved homestay accommodation
PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION
Private accommodation can include hostels, apartments,
flats or boarding. Although the University is not responsible
for private accommodation, accommodation staff do
give advice and support to students who live in private
accommodation. Accommodation Services can also help
you in your quest for accommodation, so make sure you
drop in before you start looking.
Accommodation Services on your campus will be able to
give you lots of options.
HOW TO FIND PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION
There are a number of ways to find private accommodation
at Massey, and here are a few of them. Flats and
apartments are advertised:
Weekly on Massey’s Students’ Associations’ notice
boards
On other notice boards around the University
On student radio stations (listings played once or
twice a day)
In the ‘To Let’ section of local newspapers
(Wednesdays and Saturdays)
With private rental agencies (this comes at a cost)
ads.massey.ac.nz
On accommodation websites such as
www.flatfinder.co.nz and www.flathunt.co.nz
Massey Accommodation Services can provide advice and
listings.
PRIVATE FLATTING
After their first year of study, many students move into
rented flats. Sometimes it can be quite a change from living
in a Hall of Residence or managed apartment, and there
are some important things to consider before you take the
plunge.
COST
Can you afford to pay the rent?
How much is the bond, and how much do you have to
pay in advance?
How much will food and bills cost you?
Is the flat furnished or will you have to buy furniture?
Are there hidden costs: connection fees for utilities
(power, gas and phone), moving costs, letting agency
fees (if you use one), heating costs and groceries?
Make a list.
SIZE
Is the room big enough and light enough to study?
Is there room for your car or bike to be off the road?
FLATMATES
Do they have similar ideas about housekeeping?
Have you discussed household chores, cooking
requirements and how you’ll pay the bills?
Who will put the utilities in their name?
DISTANCE
Is it within walking/biking/driving distance of Massey
or on the free bus route (Manawatū) or other public
transport.
SECURITY
Will your belongings be secure?
THE LEASE
Have you read and understood the lease?
Are you happy with the duration of the lease?
Is everyone in the flat paying a bond and signing the
lease?
We recommend that you look at a selection of flats before
choosing one. When it comes to the lease, make sure
you read the document and that you and your flatmates
are aware of your responsibilities before you sign it. If
there’s anything you don’t understand, call your local
Accommodation Services or contact the nearest branch of
Tenancy Services.
If you have problems during the year, either with
your flatmates or landlord, you can get help from
Accommodation Services, or the Students’ Association on
your campus.
Sometimes there may be a good reason why you cannot
live in the halls. Local students may choose to stay at home,
and sometimes we have a shortage of places in the halls.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t participate in activities.
Contact Accommodation Services to see how you can get
involved in campus life.

WELCOME PROGRAMMES
NGĀ HŌTAKA MANAAKI
Each campus offers welcome programmes to new
students and their families.
These programmes are designed to help students with
their transition to university life, and to give families an
opportunity to see the campus for themselves.
There are a number of different welcome programmes,
such as the Let’s Get Going programme (a course for new
students at the Manawatu Campus) and the Parents’
Programme (an introduction for parents and families).
Students and their caregivers find the programmes useful.
They can meet new people, share information with others
and ask questions of Massey staff.
For more information on welcome programmes, please
contact Accommodation Services in your area or go to
accommodation.massey.ac.nz and check out 'starting
university -> orientation'. These programmes are very
highly recommended as a way to settle into university and
make new friends.
GENERAL INFORMATION
We are serious about the security of our students. All
students at Massey University accommodation have
rooms that can be locked, and most have a range of other
security measures such as on-site security staff, alarms
and electronic gates.
We also have accommodation suitable for students with
disabilities at most campuses. Please contact your local
Accommodation Services for more information.
International students must be 18-years or older if they
wish to live in a Massey Hall of Residence. Massey
University believes that a homestay is the most
appropriate accommodation for international
students under the age of 18-years.
LIVING AT MASSEY > TE NOHO KI KŌNEI
families. These events give students a real understanding
offer, so it’s a good idea to make the most of it. You’ll find
