FLINT AREA: OVERVIEW
The Genesee Health Plan
provides basic health,
diagnostic and
prescription drug benefits
to uninsured, low-income
county residents.
Individual Development Accounts
(IDAs) are a proven strategy for helping lowincome
families navigate economic barriers
and reach financial literacy and stability.
These dedicated savings accounts can be used
only for a first-home purchase, education or
job training expenses, or starting a small
business. Participants’ contributions to IDAs
are matched by public and private sources.
A three-year, $200,000 grant to
Legal Services of Eastern Michigan for the
Flint Area IDA Collaborative supported
the establishment of 100 accounts
throughout Genesee County. The
collaborative, begun in 2003 with Mott
support, has brought several Flint area
non- and for-profit agencies and
organizations into partnership to help
local families escape poverty.
IDA grantmaking has occurred in both
the Flint Area and Pathways Out of
Poverty programs, and represents Mott
support for effective anti-poverty strategies.
Reaching across social and cultural
boundaries to create and sustain anti-racism
programs and dialogue in Flint was the
purpose of a one-year, $100,000 grant to
the Flint District Library for the operations
of Flint Area Citizens to End Racism
(FACTER).
This coalition of local residents and
organizations is dedicated to learning about,
and addressing, racism in Flint and Genesee
County. It encourages and engages
community-based action in areas of
education, faith-based initiatives, health,
housing, information/communications,
regional politics and youth.
