COMMUNITY CAFÉ — AN EVENING
OF ENTERTAINMENT AT
WOODLAWN’S GRAND
BALLROOM
Perhaps nothing symbolizes this
South Side neighborhood’s comeback
so much as this historic ballroom-overstores
gem at 63 rd Street and Cottage
Grove Avenue. Developer Andy
Schcolnik invested well over $1 million
restoring the room’s Jazz Era (1923)
ambiance, complete with Art Deco
plasterwork, crystal chandeliers and a
60-foot oak bar.
Nearly 100 conference attendees
enjoyed a homegrown talent show of
rap singers, break dancers and videomakers.
The marquee attraction was
Woodlawn’s own childrens’ string
ensemble displaying what they had
learned at the Saturday morning
String Instrument Program at nearby
Andrew Carnegie School.
RECEPTION AND DOCENT-LED
TOUR OF GARFIELD PARK
CONSERVATORY
What better escape on a chilly evening
than the tropics-under-glass paradise
created in 1907 by famed Chicago
parks designer Jens Jensen
The Conservatory has been restored
by the Chicago Park District with much
programmatic support from the Garfield
Park Conservatory Alliance, the NCP
lead agency for East Garfield Park.
It was an evening of conversation
and relaxation, of smooth jazz by a
local band and of buffet treats in
Horticulture Hall. A professional docent
led small groups of attendees through
back-lit rooms filled with lush ferns
and soaring palms, in-floor brooks
and rocky waterfalls.
