Design in the engine compartment
Air filter made of Capron ® in the Golf IV – multifunctional and shapely
Styling is in vogue these days, even
in the engine compartment. Designers
are increasingly looking towards
both esthetic and branding-typical solutions.
The multifunctional designer air filter
of MANN+HUMMEL, a development partner
and supplier of serial parts for the international
automotive and mechanical engineering
industries, fits right into this concept.
This air filter, developed for the 1.4liter
and 1.6-liter FSI engines in the new
Golf, also serves as a shapely cover for the
engine. But design is not everything. For
such a part to be able to withstand temperatures
of up to 120°C [248°F] in the engine
compartment, it has to meet other requirements
as well: it must be heat-resistant,
low-warping and exhibit a good stiffnessto-strength
ratio. The material that
MANN+HUMMEL relies on here is Capron ® ,

from Herman Miller, the U.S. office furniture
manufacturer. Mirra has the flexibility to adapt
to the size, posture and movements of the
user. Flexible zones in the backrest of the
chair support the entire spinal column and
distribute the pressure evenly across the
back. An office chair that responds to human
activity was the concept devised by the
designers at Studio 7.5. And it gained Mirra
first prize in last year’s “Best of NeoCon”
competition held by the American furniture
industry. And that isn’t all: The Society of

a polyamide-6 made by BASF. Since 2002,
MANN+HUMMEL has been using three
different filled Capron ® grades for this friction-welded
air filter.

Air filters are not only functional but also
nice to look at.
Plastics Engineers recently recognized the
Mirra work chair with the Environmental
Design Award 2004 at Global Plastics Environmental
Conference in Detroit. Ninety-six
per cent of Mirra’s materials can be economically
recycled at the end of the chair’s useful
life. Herman Miller used Capron ® nylon from
BASF for all the main components of the
award-winning chair. One of the key features
of this material is its durability, a significant
requirement demanded by this manufacturer
for all of its products. The strong and dimensionally
stable polyamide is used in the spinal
column support, seat frame, the adjustable
seat rim and the arm rests.
