BASF takes over Ticona’s polyamide 6.6 business Market position in engineering plastics strengthened As of December 31, 2003, BASF has taken over the polyamide 6.6 business from Ticona, which is the engineering plastics company of Celanese AG. Its sales were approximately 45 million euros in the year 2002. Within the scope of the transaction, all of the production sites and installations remain under the control of Ticona. To start with, Ticona will be manufacturing the polyamide 6.6 products on behalf of BASF at its American facilities in Bishop, Texas, and Florence, Kentucky. With this transaction, BASF is strengthening its market position in the sector of Expanded portfolio 29 polyamide 6.6, especially in the all-important North American market. Raimar Jahn, President of BASF’s Division Performance Polymers, underscores, “We are dedicated to being the supplier of choice for engineering plastic customers around the world. BASF’s acquisition of Ticona’s nylon 6.6 business will complement and enhance the range of product solutions we can offer.” With this sale, Ticona is concentrating on its core businesses. “The sale of the polyamide 6.6 business is a further step in Celanese’s overall Markets and Products strategy of focusing on those products which hold a leading global market position”, says Lyndon Cole, member of the Celanese AG Management Board and President of Ticona. Already at the beginning of 2003, BASF took over Honeywell’s business with engineering plastics. As a result, BASF was not only able to tap into new markets, but also to nicely complement its product portfolio. Polyamide 6.6 is an extremely versatile engineering plastic that is used not only in automotive construction, but also in household products, toys and electrical equipment.
