Mljet obiluje skrivenim plažama idealnim za nudistički turizam /
Mljet is filled with hidden beaches, which are ideal for nudist tourism
Uvala Lemuni / Cove Lemuni
Melita (Melite), which stands for “a bee” and “honey”
in Greek (mellisa, melitta). People say that there used to
be numerous swarms of bees that lived in the forests of
the island.
Perhaps all the talk about the swarms of bees won’t exactly
attract you to this island, but its rhythm of life certainly
will. If you’re craving for a peaceful and relaxed
vacation in the summer months, it’s good to know that
Mljet isn’t exactly known for its noisy, over-crowded beaches.
The most famous beaches are the sandy Saplunara
and the Blace bay (Limuni) at the southeast of the
island, as well as the pebbly beaches of Sutmihonjska
bay. However, besides the indescribable natural beauties,
such as the wonderful beaches, the forest and the
crystal-clear sea, Mljet is also filled with archaeological
sites. Therefore, in the storm-protected Polače bay, you
can find the remaining parts of a Roman palace from
the 2nd century. Remainders of the ancient Christian
basilica are also nearby, and if you’re a lover of long
walks across numerous pathways of the hill and mountain
roads, your feet can take you to plenty of lookouts
with a magnificent view.
The local people will certainly fill your ears with stories
you won’t find in any tourist brochures. For example,
they will tell you that the island has more than 17 types
of bats. Or the fact that only the “true, full-blooded”
Mljet people are buried on the island. Not to mention
the legend about the hero named Odysseus from ancient
Greece, who got thrown onto the sharp rocks of
Mljet by the sea…
The island, with its isolated and archaic way of life, has
always provoked the people of Mljet to say: “All credit
to the sea, but I’ll stick to the coast”. Surrounded by the
sea, the people of Mljet turned to the forest, the land,
