The Yakša Restaurant in Hvar – the<br />

Opiate for International Palates<br />

The Yakša restaurant in Hvar is one of those places that leave you breathless at first sight,<br />

partly because of the unique interior, and partly because of the top-notch gastronomic offering.<br />

The “Time Out” magazine has proclaimed it to be the top restaurant in 2006 – see the reason<br />

for yourself<br />

It took two years for the old idea to finally come about,<br />

and for two friends, architect Goran Kardoš and doctor<br />

Danko Vasiljević, to enjoy their Yakša restaurant<br />

at the island of Hvar. This is something they always<br />

wanted, and then they came across an old, protected<br />

house and came to the conclusion that it’s time for action.<br />

These days, the Yakša restaurant at Hektorovićeva<br />

Street is the most visited and popular place in Hvar, and<br />

it’s being glorified in a non-pretentious way.<br />

Right after arrival, foreign and local tourists are pleasantly<br />

surprised by both the exterior and interior. Goran gets the<br />

majority of credit for that, and he speaks of Yakša with<br />

ardour and enthusiasm:<br />

– The process of building the restaurant, from reconstruc-<br />

tion to decoration, took five years, and we were constantly<br />

supervising the restorer because we didn’t want<br />

the object to change too much; we wanted to save it as<br />

much as we could, and it was in bad shape. I designed<br />

the interior, constantly discussing it with Danko. However,<br />

we spent the majority of our time in designing the special<br />

offering of the restaurant.<br />

And the offering is truly special! The menu, designed by<br />

Dino Galvagno, is truly one of those to “lick your fingers”,<br />

according to everybody. The menu is actually different<br />

every single day, depending on how the fishing goes. Besides<br />

the fresh sea catch, Yakša offers some organically<br />

grown fruits and vegetables to the guests’ tables. The<br />

owners, barging in each other’s sentences, say:
