A group of Chinese illegal immigrants and
their personal fates intersect in the Parisian
quarter of Belleville - the ‘Eldorado’ where
they all hoped to find a better life.

Working with Tsai Ming-Liang and
studying the films of Hou Hsiao-Hsien in
parallel with her work as a graphic artist,
she has developed her personal approach
to the use of space and has explored the
techniques of different media, bringing to
mind the phantoms of Kiyoshi Kurosawa,
for whom the presence of paranormal powers
is taken for granted.
Disparate elements coexist in a way
which is both modern and Asian. The use of
video inserts reconciles a fractured geography
and answers the needs of emotion,
making possible the meeting of the living
with the dead, the contemporary with the
ancestral, the past and the present, and the
Chinese in France with those back in China.
France has not been through the Cultural
Revolution or post-Soviet liberalism, but
we believe that it is nonetheless possible to
tell French stories which are as breathtaking
and as romantic as those of a generation of
Chinese cinema - films of Hong Kong, Taiwan
or of America’s Chinatowns.
Producer Juliette Grandmont
In 2000, Juliette Grandmont joined Artcam
International as a producer. She became
involved in international co-productions
such as Platform by Jia Zhang Ke and The
Road by Darezhan Omirbayev.
Together with Elise Jalladeau and Natacha
Devillers, she has since launched
Charivari Films, whose first film El custodio,
directed by Rodrigo Moreno, won the Alfred
Bauer Award at the Berlinale.
She currently runs Clandestine Films,
which has three features in production:
Ich bin eine Terroristin, directed by
Valérie Gaudissart; Le meilleur d’entre
nous, directed by Catherine Klein; and
Shanghai-Belleville.
