I s s u e N o . 1 P a g e 2 Immunizations Immunizations were held at the College last week and unfortunately many students did not bring their forms. If your child did not have an immunization, please seek information from either your local doctor or the local council about the availability of : HPV vaccination for Year 9 boys Tetanus booster for all Year 10 students and HPV and chicken pox for all Year 7s. School Uniform The wearing of the Copperfield College uniform has been very pleasing this year. Families have understood that the transition to the new uniform is now complete and all students must wear the new black pants and sports uniform. Just a reminder though, if your son or daughter is out of uniform please provide a note to explain the reason and when full uniform will be worn. The policy is that students may be withdrawn from class activities if they are out of uniform without satisfactory explanation. I know it is still summer weather but please think ahead and plan for cooler days by purchasing the sport rugby top and a school jacket so you don’t get caught by surprise. I would like to draw attention to some small but significant changes to the uniform expectations as per the council review in 2012. All students are asked to wear white socks with shorts, dresses and skirts and the opaque tights girls can wear are to be navy blue. The uniform is very smart and is so successful because it is strongly supported by the school community. Netbooks There are still a significant number of students without their netbooks; parents need to be aware that their presence is necessary to sign the documentation. If you have missed the roll out days please ring our office to make arrangements to pick yours up. This service is available after school on either a Monday or a Wednesday but to save a long wait let the office know you are coming so our IT staff can have the device and documentation prepared. Swimming Sports will take place on February 19 th at Oak Park. Students are to come to school in their sports uniform; they are able to wear a top in team colours if they wish. They will be transported to and from the pool by bus. It should be a wonderful day and there will be opportunities for everyone to participate whether they are strong swimmers or not. School Photos Photos will be done at Kings Park on Thursday February 28 th . The envelopes need to be filled out and returned with the correct money to the photographers on Feb 28 th . The office and teachers do not deal with payment for student photos. All students are asked to have their school jumpers with them on the day to wear in the photos. Another date to keep in mind is the Kings Park Cross Country event on Friday March 22. Although it’s a good month away it is certainly not too early to start training for it. We have a new Japanese Assistant Teacher at our school this year. Tomoe sensei (Ms Tomoe) will be coming to your child’s Japanese classes. If you are interested in hosting a Japanese native speaker as a part of your family, please contact the school or your child’s homegroup teacher or Japanese teacher. Ms Matsuzaki Japanese Teacher Message from Tomoe sensei I’m Tomoe Fukushiro, a new assistant Japanese teacher. I’m from Shimane prefecture which is on the west side of Japan. I have a lot of hobbies. I like to read books and I like to sing in a chorus. I’ll work with the students of the College for a year, every Monday and Thursday. I’m looking forward to working with you. Thank you. I s s u e N o . 1 P a g e 3 I would like to extend a warm welcome to the year 7 students of D team and new members of our teaching team. I hope everyone had a wonderful break and had an opportunity to relax. D Team is fortunate to have four new members in our staff room. Ms Gokmen and Ms Dermody Ms Gokmen, our campus leader, and Mr Yoshikawa who teaches Japanese have both come from Sydenham. Ms Kelly has returned from family leave and is teaching English and SOSE. Ms Dermody has also returned from family leave and is 7D1’s homegroup teacher as well as teaching Mathematics and Science. Mr Yoshikawa and Ms Kelly The year 7 students look fantastic in their school uniform and appear to be settling in well. The weather has been very warm and students may be very tired when they get home. They have been enthusiastically lining up at the canteen and running around at lunchtime. Just a reminder, students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to class. Also, please phone the school or send a note to explain any absences. Term 1 is a busy term. Students have completed Literacy and Numeracy tests which will be used to assign students to groups and inform teachers in their planning. All of the students who were immunised survived without complications. Next week our team will be competing in the school swimming competitions. This is a great day and students who are unable to swim can participate in novelty events. Students are reminded to wear a hat and use sunscreen. D Team Report Later in the term, year 7 students will go on an excursion to the zoo as part of the Science curriculum. Here are some thoughts from 7D3 about their start to the year: My first two weeks of school have been great. I have enjoyed new subjects like SOSE, Science and Japanese. It has been challenging learning Japanese because it is a new language. I enjoy having different subjects because it makes the day more interesting than it was in primary only having three sessions. Will We had a lot of homework in the past two weeks which I didn’t really like. My favourite subjects are Drama, PE, Art and Technology. Andrew My first two weeks of high school have been better than I expected. We got to play games for the first couple of days so we can get to know each other better. Peter I’ve enjoyed pretty much all of my subjects. I find the teachers cool and funny. I’m looking forward to everything. Copperfield has made all year 7s feel welcome and comfortable. It is a great school. Asende One place I really love is the library because it is really big and there is a bigger variety to choose from. I hope to read a lot of books in the coming years at Kings Park. Dunya In some classes we are allowed to use laptops instead of writing and we get to learn whole new subjects. James The teachers are really welcoming and I feel I am an important part of the school family. Michelle and Zaire Ms Jenny Russell D Team Leader Excursions/ Activities Did you know you can read and print out excursion/activity notices from our website The initial notice will be given to students, and any further copies needed should be obtained from the website, under the “News & Events” section. www.copperfieldcollege.vic.edu.au In Victoria, education is compulsory for children aged between 6 and 16. When students are enrolled, it is expected they will attend every day of each term. Parents will receive notification of any student-free days. It is crucial that students develop habits of regular attendance at an early age. This includes arriving at school, and each class, on time. Students who regularly miss days of school are at risk of missing out on learning the basic building blocks in subjects, and may experience long term difficulties with their learning. School attendance helps students develop social skills, such as friendship building, team work, communication skills and healthy self-esteem. An absence from school requires a doctor’s certificate or note of explanation that has been written and signed by a parent/guardian. The note should accompany the student on the first day they return to school after the absence. If the absence is expected to be longer than one day, please notify Annette on 9365 4901.
