Grand Banks and Environs<br />
• About a dozen Mesozoic bas<strong>in</strong>s, subbas<strong>in</strong>s, , trough and sedimented<br />
ridges are petroleum prospective on the Grand Banks and environs<br />
• They all <strong>for</strong>med dur<strong>in</strong>g breakup of Pangea and subsequent Atlantic<br />
Ocean open<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• The area is dom<strong>in</strong>ated by extensional tectonics and complicated by b<br />
salt tectonics and transtensional movements<br />
• All <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>for</strong> petroleum <strong>for</strong>mation and accumulation <strong>in</strong> large<br />
structural, stratigraphic and comb<strong>in</strong>ation traps exists <strong>for</strong> the bas<strong>in</strong>s b<br />
that preserve the Late Jurassic high TOC/ high HI source rock<br />
• In other Grand Banks bas<strong>in</strong>s the existence of a viable petroleum<br />
systems rema<strong>in</strong>s to be proven<br />
• Areas of petroleum potential extend from the shallow waters of the t<br />
Banks <strong>in</strong>to the deeper waters of the cont<strong>in</strong>ental slope, as well as to<br />
ultra-deep<br />
deep-water areas such as the Orphan and Laurentian bas<strong>in</strong>s<br />
• For now, <strong>Jeanne</strong> d’Arc d<br />
is the only oil proven and produc<strong>in</strong>g bas<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> the area Enachescu, NL DNR 2009
