SEA SIREN WINS
MANIKATO STAKES
Third Group one win for John o’shea-
Trained filly
Sea Siren SPORTPIX
The John O’Shea-trained Sea Siren
(Fastnet Rock) won her third
Group One at Moonee Valley
yesterday evening when beating
Mental (Lonhro) by a quarter of a length in
the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
The favourite Buffering (Mossman)
battled for the early lead with the Clarry
Conners-trained Satin Shoes (Flying Spur)
and having worked throughout, Buffering
had nothing left in the home straight, tiring in
the closing stages he finished a disappointing
sixth.
This left Mental, who came on the rails
with a strong finish, and Sea Siren to battle
out the finish, with jockey Jim Cassidy and
the four-year-old mare coming out on top.
We’re Gonna Rock (Fastnet Rock) was two
and a half lengths further back in third.
“She took to the Valley like a duck to
water,” Cassidy said. “I knew on the corner
they’d have to be good to come from behind
me and beat me. I thought she’d win and she
did.”
Sea Siren, whose other Group One
victories came in the Doomben 10,000
(1350m) and BTC Cup (1200m) both in
Brisbane last winter, is now likely to head to
FORGET ME NOT GONE
The juvenile filly Forget Me Not
put down. Purchased by James
Harron Bloodstock for $910,000 at
this year’s Inglis Australian Easter
to trial well yesterday. Her dam,
the Patinack Farm Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on 10 November,
before she travels to Hong Kong in December.
“I’d love to run her down the straight at Flemington,” said O’Shea.
“I’d also love to take her to Hong Kong, it’s the pinnacle of
international racing in the world and I think she’d be very effective.”
Buffering’s trainer Robert Heathcote was confused by his
performance but stated the Patinack Farm Classic as the next likely
start for the five-year-old.
“He was extremely disappointing and I don’t know why,” said
Heathcote.
“He had no rhythm. It was an uncharacteristically below-par
performance.”
Sea Siren (4m Fastnet Rock – Express A Smile by Success Express)
has won six of nine starts for prize money of $1,348,330. Bred by
Keith Biggs, she is a half sister to the C S Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)
winning sire Oratorio (AUS) (Stravinsky) and the Matamata Breeders’
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Lady Dehere (Dehere), who herself foaled
the dual Group Two winner Oracy (Zabeel) and The Lady (Stravinsky),
who won two Listed races. Sea Siren is out of the unraced Express A
Smile (Success Express), who is herself a sister to the Listed winner and
Angelic Light SPORTPIX
Angelic Light (Holy Roman Emperor) won her third race in as many
weeks when taking the William Crockett Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at
Moonee Valley yesterday. Having won a maiden over 1107m at Kilmore
on 2 October, Angelic Light went on to score in a fillies’ handicap over
1200m on 15 October at Echuca and clearly relished the step in class
yesterday, beating the consistent Agueda (General Nediym) by three
quarters of a length, with Saturn Rock (Fastnet Rock) third.
Jockey Michael Rodd had the Robbie Griffiths-trained filly in
behind the leader Roll The Bones (Red Ransom) and was biding his
time as rival runners moved around to make their moves turning for
home. With Roll The Bones drifting, Angelic Light took the lead and ran
on strongly to the line to beat the favourite Agueda.
“I was concerned [on the home turn] but I knew I had the horse
under me to get me out of trouble,” Rodd said.
“It was a bit of a low-percentage ride on my behalf but I just felt
that if I had to slow up and try to come around them then I would have
lost momentum and she might not have got there in time.”
Angelic Light will now head to the Desirable Stakes (Listed, 1400m)
on 6 November at Flemington.
“She’s come a very long way in a short amount of time,” Rodd said.
“This was my first ride on her but Robbie pumped her up to me
today and said she’s got a really big future, he thought I’d really like her
and he’s bang on.”
Angelic Light (3f Holy Roman Emperor – Flashed by Fuji Kiseki) has
now won three of her four starts and $107,500 in prize money. She
was bred by Northern Lodge Stud and sold for $30,000 at the Inglis
Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale to Griffiths Training when offered by
her breeders. She is out of the Ottawa Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner
Flashed (Fuji Kiseki) who has produced four winners from four runners,
and whose dam, Bright Light (El Moxie) also won the Ottawa Stakes.
Bright Light is a half sister to the stakes placed Alcidon (Acidity) and
It was an impressive victory for Kazanluk (Red Ransom) in
yesterday’s Moonee Valley Fillies’ Classic (Gr 2, 1600m), who scored by
a length and a half from Stella Lante (Starcraft), with Moreau (Snitzel)
third. The three-year-old filly was third in the Morphettville Guineas
(Listed, 1600m) to Maybe Discreet (Shamardal) on her last start at
Morphettville on 15 September.
Having won her a maiden on her second start on 17 August at
Geelong, Kazanluk could step up in class again with a start in the VRC
Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington on 8 November.
However, the decision on the next start for the Darley-owned filly
will be left to her trainer Anthony Freedman.
“We’re a little bit behind the eight-ball for the Oaks but we’ll leave
it to Anthony and see what he wants to do,” said Darley Australia chief
executive Henry Plumptre.
Despite the controversy surrounding her barrier of 11, owner
John Singleton still believes his mare More Joyous (More Than
Ready) can win today’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee
Valley.
Singleton admits he was not pleased when trainer Gai Waterhouse
picked barrier 11 for the six-year-old, who has won 21 of her 29 starts,
including eight at Group One level.
“You’ve got to understand that I’m a pretty easy-going guy normally
but even Gai, weird and wonderful though she is, that was more weird
than wonderful,” Singleton told radio station RSN.
“But enough of that, that’s boring. The thing that stops me worrying
about barrier 11 is when they [are not expected to win] they do win, the
best horses,” he said.
“I think she’s definitely the best horse in the race.”
With More Joyous’ already impressive record, Singleton believes, “If
she were to win the Cox Plate tomorrow she will go down as one of the
all-time greats.”
More Joyous’ pedigree speaks for itself, she is out of the Australian
Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence), a half sister to
the four-time Group One winner Tuesday Joy (Carnegie) and their dam,
Joie Denise (Danehill), won the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). Her third
dam, Denise’s Joy (Seventh Hussar), also won the Queensland Oaks before
the Pattern was in place and is the grandam of a number of Group One
winners.
Singleton Believes More Joyous Can Still Win Cox Plate
The New Zealand Racing Board’s executive team has undergone
a number of changes in order to progress the growth of the
country’s racing industry.
NZ Racing Board Chief Executive Chris Bayliss said the
appointment of four highly regarded New Zealand business professionals to
his leadership team would provide the necessary expertise and experience
to deliver long-term growth to the industry and complement other changes
within the organisation.
Stewart McRobie joins the organisation as Chief Financial Officer, Monique
Cairns as General Manager Strategy, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Colin
Philp as Chief Information Officer and Shameel Sahib as Head of Strategy.
Bayliss was delighted with the calibre of the new appointees, which
would enhance the NZ Racing Board’s leadership capability with no increase
to its cost base.
“The industry is facing a number of significant challenges and
opportunities that make it vital we have a leadership group comprising
different skills, experiences and approach.
start conqueror the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner All Too Hard
(Casino Prince). Waterhouse will also saddle fellow three-year-old Proisir
(Choisir) but owner Lloyd Williams believes his five-year-old Green Moon
(Montjeu), will set the race up to make it tough going for the three-yearolds.
“I can tell you one thing, my horse will turn it into a tough race,”
Williams said. “He’s ready to run a mile-and-a-half so he’ll run this race out.”
The Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Green Moon, who is trained
by Robert Hickmott, will be ridden by Craig Williams today and owner
Williams went on to say, “If Craig wants to take it up a half mile from home
and turn it into a race, that’s fine. Or if he wants to sit and wait, he can do
that because this horse can sprint.”
Pierro is the current $4.40 favourite for the race, with Green Moon
at $5.50 and Ocean Park (Thorn Park) at $7. The Gary Hennessy-trained
Ocean Park has done the majority of his work in the lead up to the Cox
Plate on the treadmill.
Hennessy used the treadmill extensively prior to Ocean Park’s
three Group One victories this term, the Challenge Stakes (1400m), the
Underwood Stakes (1800m) and the Caulfield Stakes (2000m).
“Apart from his two races he’s only had a saddle on his back three
times since he arrived over here. He had his final gallop on the Tuesday
back home at Matamata before the Underwood then two more workouts
between that race and the Caulfield Stakes,” Hennessy told The Informant.
“One of those was when we took him over to Moonee Valley for a look
around there, then his Tuesday gallop before the Caulfield Stakes. Since
then his only other trackwork was at Moonee Valley on Tuesday.”
“The New Zealand racing industry makes an important contribution
to the country economically, socially and culturally, and these new
appointments to the leadership team will ensure we’re able to take an
effective, agile and innovative approach to maximising this contribution
and leading growth.
“There is a clear need for change. This new leadership team will initiate and
lead that change with a strategy focused on delivering significantly enhanced
returns to the racing industry.”
All four new executives will start in their roles from next month. In addition,
the key appointment of General Manager Sales and Distribution is pending.
Meanwhile, as part of the NZ Racing Board’s renewed commitment to
transparency and open communication with industry stakeholders, Bayliss
will join new Board Chairman Dr Alan Jackson in December in hosting the
organisation’s first annual general meeting in more than five years.
Open to all racing industry participants, the 6 December meeting in
Wellington will also see full audited results for the 2011/12 financial year made
available.
6 HONG KONG NEwS
A
field of 12 heads to post at Sha Tin tomorrow for a
competitive renewal of the Premier Bowl (HK Gr 2,
1200m), with Australian-bred Captain Sweet (Fastnet
Rock) bidding to defy top-weight to land the spoils.
The John Moore-trained five-year-old carried the same 133lbs
weight into second place behind Australian-bred Vital Flyer (Magic
Albert) on his seasonal return in the Sha Tin Sprint Trophy (HK Gr 3,
1000m) on 1 October and stretches out to 1200m this time under
Brett Prebble.
And with Hong Kong’s two star sprinters, Lucky Nine (Dubawi)
and New Zealand-bred Little Bridge (Faltaat), recovering from their
recent exertions in Japan, Captain Sweet will aim to take advantage.
“I’ve never looked at Captain Sweet as a solid Group One horse,
but with the two big horses not there, he comes into this race with
a great chance and his work leading into it has been solid,” revealed
Moore.
Captain Sweet was sold to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for
$60,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale when
offered by Glastonbury Farms as Agent. He is one of four winners out
of Strega (Lake Coniston), herself the daughter of the Listed winner
Rancho Miss (Rancher).
But the top-weight faces tough opposition nonetheless – not
least from three of his stablemates.
“Majestic Falcon has carried over 130lbs in his last few starts and
now drops to a featherweight,” continued Moore. “He could be the
knock-out horse for long-shot punters seeking value, if he can get a
nice run through. Able Speed has done everything right. First up he
needed it and I was very pleased last time considering 1000m isn’t his
Meanwhile, Derek Cruz saddles a talented trio in Flying Blue
(Goldkeeper). The last-named was a close second on his latest start
over 1200m on 8 September and came home in front in a recent
barrier trial.
The Paul O’Sullivan-trained front-runner Aashiq (Viking Ruler) is
a dual Hong Kong Group Three winner and was a fine second in the
National Day Cup (HK Gr 3, 1400m) last time. Aashiq was sold at the
2007 New Zealand Bloodstock Carnival Yearling Sale for NZ$40,000
to Paul’s brother Lance O’Sullivan when consigned by Brighthill Farm.
The gelding is a half brother to the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m)
runner-up Finderskeepers (Keeper), whose winning dam Join The
Fun (Rory’s Jester), is a half sister to the dam of the dual Listed winner
Prancelot (Jeune).
O’Sullivan also runs the capable Rich Unicorn (Danehill Dancer),
winner of the race last year when bearing the flag of John Size.
Manfred Man relies on the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale
graduate Supreme Win (Fastnet Rock), who was sold for $400,000 to
Asian Bloodstock Services from the draft of Statheden Stud and saw
off several of tomorrow’s rivals to win the HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup
over 1200m on 8 September, when Cerise Cherry finished second.
The well-regarded Arrived Ahead (Marju) is one of those seeking to
reverse placings. The field is completed by El Zonda (Fraam), who
scored last time out over the course and distance.
FASTNET ROCK
THE BEST SIRE
IN AUSTRALASIA
Analysis: Classy mare Sea Siren was smartly away and eased
to get an ideal run one out and one back in a solid pace, before
switching three wide at the home turn. She swept to the lead at
the 100m mark and then fought back for an impressive first-up
win. Mental was eighth on the rails to the turn. He got though
along the inside from the 200m mark to challenge the winner
nearing the post, then fought on for a very good second, beaten a
neck. We’re Gonna Rock settled at the tail of the ten-horse field.
He made a strong, wide run from the 600m point to challenge
five wide on the home turn. He tired a bit in the final stages but
did well to hold third placing in a game effort. Hallowell Belle
was seventh in the centre between runners until into straight,
she then finished quite well when clear late for fourth. Temple
Of Boom was about sixth, wide and without cover, and put in a
run nearing the turn. He then fought on for a sound fifth. The
favourite Buffering led but had a hard run in retaining the lead
being pressured by the outsider Satin Shoes ($41) to the home
turn. He understandably tired in the straight after a torrid trip to
finish sixth, beaten by three lengths, while Satin Shoes finishing
eighth, beating two to the post.
Analysis: Kazanluk settled near last and wide after starting from
the outside barrier in the 12-horse field. She got cover mid-race
before going very wide from the 600m point. She moved up
strongly five wide on the home turn and went on to an impressive
one and half lengths win in a good staying performance. She may
have claims for a VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) start on tonight’s
effort. Stella Lante was sixth in the centre between runners to
the home turn. She switched across heels at the 200m mark and
battled on to grab second in a photo. Moreau was midfield before
improving with a wide run from the 600m point to challenge at the
400m, she then fought on for a good third. Balaclava Lady was
eighth between runners before being urged wide approaching the
home turn. She got to third at the 100m then tired a bit for fourth.
saturday 27 october 2012 ANZ
Favoured pair of Love For Ransom ($3.80 fav) and Mareeza
($4.00) were both handily placed but were shuffled back behind
tiring horses at the home turn and their unplaced performances
should be excused.
13 SINGAPORE NEwS
The Australian-bred four-year-old Goal Keeper
(Untouchable) stretched his winning sequence to five
with victory in the $125,000 Kranji Stakes A over 1200m
on Friday, writes Craig Brennan.
Sent off the $7 favourite in the five horse field, Goal Keeper,
ridden by Danny Beasley, scored a comfortable one-and-a-quarter
length victory over Texan Takeover (Stravinsky) with Merchant (Fubu)
four lengths back in third place.
The eight-horse field was cut to five when three of the
declarations for the event – Better Be The One (More Than Ready),
Mr Raffles (Storm Creek) and Dragon Spirit (Due Sasso) – were race
morning scratchings.
Yin Xin (Quorum), a stablemate of Goal Keeper, led early before
Beasley took the gelding to the front. Texan Takeover was caught
three wide initially as Merchant kicked up on his inside.
Moreira eventually elected to roll forward to sit in second place
by the time the turn was reached, shuffling Yin Xin back to third.
Soon after straightening Beasley gave Goal Keeper his head and
the gelding quickly opened up a three length break on his rivals.
Texan Takeover tried valiantly to peg back the margin and was doing
so over the final 100m, but the winning post arrived too soon.
Merchant was outgunned up the straight by the first two, but he
also held Yin Xin and Won’t Stop (Testa Rossa) just as comfortably.
Trainer Theo Kieser said he would now head back to the Polytrack
with Goal Keeper over the next two months.
“He’s shown his versatility today winning on the turf but I think
he’s a better horse on the Polytrack,” said Kieser.
“He’s unbeaten on that surface and there are some nice races
coming up for him.
Goal Keeper Bags Five In A Row
Goal Keeper SINGAPORE TURF CLUB
saturday 27 october 2012 ANZ
“Winning today has ruled him out of the Benchmark 97 races but
there are some Open Class races coming up that suit.
“There is also a greater variety of distance which to race him over
on the Polytrack. He’s just as comfortable over 1000m and 1100m as
he is over today’s distance.”
Beasley said there was a lot to like about the victory despite the
fact the gelding did “knock up” over the concluding stages.
“He had a tune up in a trial on Tuesday morning and that just got
him a little bit keen early on today,” said Beasley.
“He was pretty keen in the first furlong or so, but he came back
after that and relaxed pretty well.
“Theo’s done a great job with this horse. It’s never easy winning
five races in a row and he’s done a great job placing him to do so.
“This horse came out of Scone as a yearling and it’s a great
advertisement for the Australian breeding industry to find a good
tough little horse like this bloke.”
Goal Keeper, who was purchased by his trainer at the 2010 Magic
Milllions Queensland Horses In Training Sale by consigned by Hill Red
Farm, as Agent, is out of the winner My Cousin Rachel (Kampala), a
daughter of the Listed winner Queen Of Cornwall (Cornish Prince),
who is also the grandam of the dual Group One winner Gold Edition
(Lion Hunter) and the Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner
Newquay (Last Tycoon). Goal Keeper has won eight of his 13 career
starts with a further three minor placings and took his prize money to
around the $380,000 mark for owner Sam Chee Kiong.
