PHOTOGRAPHY<br />
Special Notes for Photography Students:<br />
Although not required, it is strongly recommended that<br />
students have access to a film or digital camera. Equipment<br />
specifications vary by school. Check with the instructor. Class<br />
size may be limited based on the number of enlargers.<br />
(Three students will share one enlarger).<br />
Digital Photography<br />
Prerequisite: None (This course does not serve as a prerequisite for<br />
Photography II or other darkroom based courses.)<br />
This course introduces students to digital photography as a 21st<br />
century art form. Students will explore traditional and innovative<br />
techniques and concepts.<br />
Photography I<br />
Prerequisite: Classification as a sophomore (junior at NHS)<br />
This course introduces students to photography as an important<br />
art form, from its beginning in the 1800's to today. Students will<br />
learn how to use 35mm cameras, develop film, and make prints<br />
using traditional black and white darkroom techniques.<br />
Photography II<br />
Prerequisite: Photography I<br />
Students further develop their picture taking and darkroom skills<br />
through independent projects. Class discussion will focus on<br />
understanding photography as an art form and on learning how<br />
to use design principles to critique their own and their classmates'<br />
photographs.<br />
Photography III<br />
Prerequisite: Photography I and II<br />
This course continues the work begun in Photography II. In<br />
addition, students will focus on making darkroom decisions that<br />
will make their work more expressive and on developing personal<br />
style.<br />
Photography Portfolio:Advanced Visual Problems<br />
Prerequisites: Senior Status and Photography III<br />
Students develop a high quality portfolio that they will be able to<br />
use as part of their application to an art school or art department.<br />
The focus of the course will be on developing keen problem<br />
solving skills and using a variety of picture taking and darkroom<br />
techniques.<br />
Performing Arts <strong>Course</strong>s<br />
Special Notes for Performing Arts Students<br />
❚ Performing Arts students must attend rehearsals, which may<br />
be scheduled before or after school. Students must participate<br />
in all performances and wear costumes as required.<br />
❚ Some performing arts courses may be repeated for credit.<br />
Check the course prerequisites for this information.<br />
❚ Some music courses are offered only in the spring or fall.<br />
Check the course prerequisites and your school's registration<br />
form for this information.<br />
❚ Performing arts students will benefit from studying their art<br />
form both semesters in order to maintain their technical skills<br />
and progress to more proficient levels.<br />
THEATER ARTS<br />
Theater Arts I<br />
Prerequisite: None<br />
Students will experience creative dramatics, mime, reader's theater,<br />
interpretive movement, and oral interpretation as they<br />
explore the actor's craft. In addition, they will learn how directing,<br />
theater history, and theater management contribute to a<br />
stage production. Behind the scenes, students explore how costumes,<br />
make-up, props, and scenery along with special effects,<br />
lighting, and sound bring magic to the stage.<br />
Theater Arts II<br />
Prerequisites: Theater Arts I or audition with the teacher.<br />
This course further develops the skills studied in Theater Arts I.<br />
Through classroom scene work and the study of acting techniques<br />
in different historical periods, students will refine their acting<br />
skills. Participating in ensemble acting and student directed<br />
plays will provide additional opportunities to portray a variety of<br />
roles. Students will learn how to critique their own and others'<br />
performances and will continue learning about technical theater<br />
and theater management.<br />
Theater Arts III<br />
Honors Theater Arts III<br />
Prerequisites: Theater Arts II, classification as a junior or a senior, or<br />
placement audition with the instructor.<br />
The focus of this class is on learning how to direct. Once students<br />
select their scene, they will analyze the script, audition<br />
actors from among their classmates, plan rehearsals, make decisions<br />
about blocking, and develop a plan for set and lighting<br />
design. Each student directed scene will be showcased for a live<br />
audience. Honors Theater III involves additional in-depth application<br />
of theater arts knowledge, skills, and processes.<br />
