Work and <strong>High</strong>er Education Opportunities in some CTE Clusters<br />
Cooperative Education ("Co-Op")<br />
❚ Prerequisite: Classified as a junior or senior and enrolled in a<br />
Career and Technical Education course<br />
❚ Some Career and Technical Education Program Areas<br />
offer a Co-Op’ opportunity for students. Students<br />
electing to take cooperative courses receive classroom<br />
instruction each day and work in related on-the-job<br />
training, for which they are paid by their employers.<br />
Students must work a minimum of 150 hours to receive<br />
an academic credit for the cooperative work experience.<br />
The teacher/coordinator and employer develop a training<br />
plan for each student which is the basis for evaluating the<br />
student's progress on the job and in the classroom.<br />

Internship<br />
❚ Prerequisite: Classified as a junior or senior, 16 years of age or<br />
older, and enrolled in a Career and Technical program or have<br />
completed a Career and Technical Education course sequence.<br />
❚ An internship provides the opportunity to apply skills<br />
developed in an advanced level course to a practical<br />
situation. Competencies to be learned during the<br />
internship are agreed upon by the teacher, the placement<br />
supervisor and the student prior to beginning the internship.<br />
Students must work a minimum of 150 hours to<br />
receive an academic credit for the work experience.<br />

Industry Certifications<br />
❚ Students interested in earning an Industry Certification<br />
should meet with their school's career counselor. Students who<br />
complete an Industry Certification will have the qualifications<br />
to apply for a variety of jobs after graduation. Below is a list<br />
of the Industry Certifications that CTE programs prepare<br />
students for:<br />
❚ ASE automotive technician - NATEF certified<br />
❚ Barbering and Cosmetology state liscenses<br />
❚ Certifiied Nursing Assistant (CNA)<br />
❚ Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA®)<br />
❚ CompTIA A+® computer engineering technician<br />
❚ Comp TIA Network + network technician<br />
❚ Microsoft Office Specialist (Word/Publisher/PowerPoint<br />
and Access/Excel)<br />
❚ ServSafe Food Safety®<br />
Community College <strong>Course</strong>s<br />
❚ A high school student 16 years of age or older is<br />
permitted to enroll in a community college course if<br />
the principal approves and the student meets the legal<br />
requirements to enroll. Students must be enrolled in high<br />
school courses for at least half time and be making<br />
appropriate progress toward graduation. Students may<br />
receive credit toward high school graduation as well as<br />
credit at the community college.<br />
