A New Way of Flight Training… - American Bonanza Society

This began back in the
fall of 2007 – just four
years ago. My partners
and I had agreed and
it was time to move up from the
Twin Comanche. We wanted higher,
faster, more comfort, and more
capability. We found all of that in
our 58P Baron, 58TB. I flew her from
her home in Midland, Texas, with
the previous owner; we knew of
each other through Angel Flight. We
went through the pre-buy process,
and in early December she was ours.
Luckily we were able to close on the
sale of the Twin Comanche the same
week… so we owned two airplanes
for only a few days.

From there we began our training,
and soon we were on our way to the
first BPPP experience. Over the years
we took advantage of BPPP, ABS
service clinics, and, a year ago, went
to SimCom for simulator training. We
had a healthy respect for her and
trained regularly.
She became a large part of our
lives. My partners and I used her for
Angel Flights and personal trips. The
comfort, speed, and capability of the
P-Baron are hard to imagine until you
have one. She became my personal
time machine. With elderly parents
500 miles away, she gave me the ability
to see them regularly; commercial
flights were hard to schedule and
driving took 10 hours. The P-Baron
made it a quick two-hour flight.
Angel Flights were easy since she
was so comfortable. Pressurization,
air conditioning (a requirement in
Texas summers!), and smooth handling
made patients at ease. We flew
so many that we became friends with
some of them.
We were able
to introduce people
to general avi -
ation who had
never been in a
small plane. Some -
times it was even
small people in small planes.
We were able to bring my elderly
parents down to Texas for gradua -
tions and weddings when commercial
air travel simply wasn’t an
option. Without it, they would’ve
missed seeing their granddaughter
graduate from college and get married.
Unfortunately for me, financial
situations change. In my case, it
meant giving up a big part of my
life, at least temporarily. She’s gone
now, but not forgotten. At some point
there will be another in my life, but
I doubt if anything will ever be able to
take her place.
