Sleep Apnea
The medical profession has become increasingly aware of the
health effects from sleep disorders. Though there are a number of
sleep disorders, obstructive sleep apnea is chief among them. The
FAA has also become increasingly interested in the impairment of
pilot performance that often accompanies sleep apnea, along with the
detrimental effects on pilot health.
The word “apnea” means “without
breathing.” Sleep apnea describes a
pause in breathing, sometimes lasting
5-10 seconds or more. The term “obstructive
sleep apnea,” as the name
implies, refers to a physical blockage
in the passage of air through the nose
and mouth into the trachea (windpipe).
Consider a pilot lying on his
back, snoring deeply. His tongue can
drop back, blocking the passage of
air from both the nose and the mouth.
His wife, sleeping with a pillow over
her head to dampen the sound, may
hear him stop breathing for a number
of seconds. He may seem to choke
or gasp with a stutter as he tries to
breathe. Then he might awaken partially,
turn his head or body a bit, and
do this again a few minutes later. If
this occurs often, such as 10-15 times
per hour, sleep is interrupted. Sleep
