JPI
troubleshooting
David Gates
Marana, Arizona
I have an S35. A new IO-550B
Q. was installed three years ago,
and a new JPI EDM 700 was installed
at the same time. Not long after the
install I noticed that engaging gear
down or flaps etc. would cause the
EDM to reboot. There were no other
signs of problems. The problem has
worsened. Engaging almost any
accessory causes the EDM to reboot.
The A&P checked voltages and all
were good. He checked the ground
and it was fine. He changed the hot
lead from the avionics buss to the main
buss, but there was no improvement.
A new sealed battery was installed. He
put in a new voltage regulator. He said
that although voltages were correct,
the alternator was going off-line from
time to time. He says now that the
new regulator has cured the alternator
drop-off but not the EDM shutdown/
reboot. He is now sending the EDM
back to JPI for bench check. Does
this all make sense I had not noted
any indication of alternator drop-off,
or any other electrical anomaly for
that matter. Can you think of anything
else to check
I would also suspect the electrical
A. buss voltage doing a fluctuation
that exceeded the JPI limits. I would
check all grounds from battery to
engine to airframe to check total
value. —NP
V-Tail
speed restriction
William Greene
San Angelo, Texas
Is there an AD regarding speed
Q. restriction because of the tail
on my 1947 Bonanza, and if so what
is it
AD 2002-21-13 put a temporary
A. airspeed restriction of 144 mph
(125 KIAS) on 1947-1950 Bonanzas
until a full fuselage skin thickness
and empennage inspection was
complete and any necessary repairs
were made. The speed restriction
was lifted when an individual airplane
was fully compliant with these
requirements. All inspections and
repairs must have been completed
before December 10, 2005, or the
airplane was no longer permitted
to be flown. Any airplane not
compliant with AD 2002-21-13
would now need to have an FAA
Special Flight Permit (ferry permit)
if it must be flown to a location
for inspection and any needed
repairs. There’s a one-page synop -
sis of AD 2002-21-13 compliance
require ments in the V-Tail Fact
Sheet on the Maintenance & Operations
page for your Bonanza in the
Members Only section of the ABS
website. —TT
