the opinion that the “Diaspora mentality” of the Jews made the majority of
them “go like sheep to the slaughter.”
There are many other possible texts to choose from on the question of
antisemitism and the Holocaust. The reason I chose Hilberg is precisely
because he is much more often thought of as being committed to a life-long
dispassionate, analytical, and meticulous study of the machinery of genocide;
it is this that makes his views on the cultural precedents of the Holocaust all
the more striking.
