<strong>The</strong>re are many other possible texts to choose from on the question of<br />

antisemitism and the Holocaust. <strong>The</strong> reason I chose Hilberg is precisely<br />

because he is much more often thought of as being committed to a life-long<br />

dispassionate, analytical, and meticulous study of the machinery of genocide;<br />

it is this that makes his views on the cultural precedents of the Holocaust all<br />

the more striking.<br />
