• Physicists Celebrate
Evidence of Higgs Bosun
Scientists at the world’s biggest
apparent end of a decades-long
quest for a new subatomic particle
called the Higgs boson, or
“God particle,” which could
help explain why all matter has
mass and crack open a new
realm of subatomic science.
Scientists have speculated that
the new discovery could one day
huge items to be launched into
Notes from
The Tooth Is Out There: Human, but 400,000 Years Old
In the fall of 2010, scientists in Israel announced a discovery that could push the history of the
anatomically modern human species back to about 400,000 years. The general view among
mainstream scientists is that humans like us first appeared less than 200,000 years ago. As regular
readers of this column know, I believe humans like us have existed for many millions of years,
going back to the very beginnings of life on Earth. Therefore I see the discovery in Israel as a tiny
step in the right direction for mainstream scientists. But they have a long way to go before they
reach a proper estimate of human antiquity.
What exactly is the discovery
made in Israel? An international
team of archaeologists
led by Israel Hershkovitz of Tel
Aviv University reported finding
eight human teeth in the
Qesem cave about 12 kilometers
east of Tel Aviv. Their report
(Middle Pleistocene dental
remains from Qesem Cave, Israel)
was published in American
Journal of Physical Anthropology
(Volume 144, Issue 4, pages
575–592, April 2011). The report
says (p. 575) “none of the
Qesem teeth shows a suite of
Neandertal characters,” and concludes
that “the balance of the
evidence suggests a closer simi-
Israeli
Tooth
larity with the Skhul/Qafzeh dental material.” The fossils from Skhul/Qafzeh, also in Israel, are attributed
to Homo sapiens and are between 80,000 and 120,000 years old. But the fossil human
teeth from the Qesem Cave are far older. The dating of the cave deposits was done using a uranium
series method and yielded an age of up to 400,000 years.
The discovery in Israel of possible evidence for a modern human presence 400,000 years ago
was presented as something radically new, generating headlines around the world. But if we look
carefully into the history of archaeology, we can find earlier reports of such things. These reports
have disappeared from the current database of archaeology because of a process of knowledge filtration.
Evidence that radically contradicts dominant theories is eliminated from discussion. In many
cases, the scientists doing the knowledge filtering do not think they are concealing true evidence,
which if known would cause people to reject their theories. Instead, they think that something
must be wrong with the evidence, and therefore, acting as responsible scientists, they do not include
it in the category of acceptable evidence. But the result is just the same as if it were a deliberate
conspiracy to suppress uncomfortable facts. Many people, including professional archaeologists,
remain unaware of this evidence. From this huge body of eliminated archaeological evidence,
I will give one example among many that shows anatomically modern humans existing at about
400,000 years ago. I could give such evidence going back even much further in time, back four million
years, forty million years, and even further. But here I just want to show that the recent discovery
in Israel is not the first one that shows humans like us existed at least 400,000 years ago.
