National Geographic Channel’s new, eight-part series,
“Chasing UFOs,” which premiered this
summer. You get to join three thrill seekers in
their adventure-packed quest to explore alienrelated
mysteries. Comprising one believer, one
skeptic, and one undecided—meet
the dynamic
“three-o”: (Yes, this DVD
has a ‘Batman-and-Robinesque’
feel to it, though
there’s also the ‘X-File-ish’
manner, as well. But these
“Scullys and Mulders” are
not looking for more stories
on extraterrestrial activity
as much as they’re
looking for answers, so
they say.)
Erin Ryder—the team’s
tech supervisor and one
tough-as-nails female with a
passion for adventure (the
undecided one)
Ben McGee—the lead
field researcher, their resident
scientist, who gathers
evidence at proposed sites
of unexplained occurrences
and scientifically determines
its origin (the
skeptic)
James Fox—the “UFOlogist”
of the group—the believer,
with good reason—
He is the innovative investigator
who has already
produced two documentaries
on UFOs: I Know
What I Saw and Out of the
Blue (which was reviewed
in the previous issue of Atlantis
Rising). His continuing search is for definitive
evidence that can prove we are not
alone.
In the series premiere, Ryder, Ben, and
James saddle up for an investigation into a
close encounter of the Texas kind. Following
reports of an enormous object that was spotted
by dozens of people across two Texas towns,
the team sets out to find an explanation. On
Tuesday, January 2008, around 9 p.m., residents
in the town of Dublin noticed a string of intensely
bright lights moving in from the northeast.
Witnesses said the lights began blinking
and creating patterns that resembled Egyptian
hieroglyphics. As the object moved over the
town, those looking up said it made no noise.
The object then traveled on to Stephenville,
four miles west. Residents reported seeing the
same lights and patterns before the craft disappeared
into the night. The object was spotted
by so many people it became national news;
but even with the media attention, there’s been
no explanation for what the people of these
towns saw. After following up with some local
leads, the team organizes an impromptu Town
Hall. More than 30 people attend to share what
they witnessed that Tuesday night. What strikes
the team is how similar their accounts are. The
testimonies only ramp up the team’s curiosity
and resolve to find an explanation. But while
searching for the truth, they have a sighting
that makes them wonder what’s really going on
in the Texas skies.
Then, for the second episode, they head to
Fresno, California, where residents fear they are
the ones being watched after witnessing unusual
objects patroling the night skies and noticing a
white van spying on them. Some say the government
is using alien aircraft to spy on citizens.
The team finds itself in a compromising
situation or two as they proceed.
You’ll either find yourself entertained by
this series, as it does have a fun vibe, or disappointed
if you expected more serious professionalism.
Either way, the quality is great!
