This connection is arguably the most significant and challenging planetary influence in a generation. These planets will move in and out of an exact square seven times from 2012 - 2015. The focus of the planetary aspect pattern is radical change and higher awareness. Pluto’s powers of transformation in the sign of structure are combining with the potentially shattering and awakening force of Uranus. We are living through a major generational upheaval, and this union calls for revolutionary change at a deep level. We are challenged to examine old structures and patterns that need to be deconstructed. Resistance to this energy builds to a pressure point that can bring an explosive and volcanic release. The conjunction of Uranus and Pluto occurred in the sign of Virgo and peaked during 1965-1966 while opposed to Saturn in Pisces. The decade of the sixties saw the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Viet Nam war and resulting peace movement, and the first Moon landing. Seen in a larger context the decade of the sixties was a phase-shift in a long evolutionary process. Uranus in Aries is now presenting another intense trigger, and the energies have built again to a critical mass. A planetary conjunction begins a cycle of relationship as the motions of the planets involved move to form aspects that are sequential divisions of a circle. When two planets move into a square after a conjunction, as is happening now, what emerges at the joining pushes for greater resolution at the square. This Uranus/Pluto square is the next phase in a slowly unfolding cycle that has included some other challenging configurations. When Uranus moved into Aries in 2010, Saturn was in the early degrees of Libra, and a major Cardinal Cross and T-Square formed in the sky. In 2011 the U.S. had its seventh Saturn return, presenting a major growth opportunity and reexamination of America’s purpose (see AR #81). The Uranus/Pluto square also triggers the Sun in Cancer/Saturn in Libra square in America’s birth chart, challenging U.S. relation- ships and world image. In 2022 Pluto will be at 27 degrees Capricorn, and the US will experience a Pluto return, a once-in-248-year occurrence, that may bring unprecedented transformation. Astrologically Uranus is the awakener and dramatically disrupts the status quo and dismantles structures that Saturn has built in earlier paradigms. The discovery of Uranus upset the “sacred seven” number of visible planets and added an uncomfortable eighth, demanding a wider view of the solar system. Uranus acts in what seems to be a sudden and unexpected manner, creating a temporary chaos that perturbs what might have seemed to be a sensible and predictable order. Uranus sometimes seems to level our previous way of life, stripping us bare. Astrologer Rob Hand says Uranus is the “random element of mutation.” Uranus represents radical change, invention, revolution, and the capacity for idealism; its effect can be shocking and unpredictable. Uranus in the fiery sign of Aries sparks an irrepressible urge for freedom, an irresistible energy that breaks us out of self-imposed prisons. Isabel Hickey says Uranus can help us discover the undiscovered. Viewed in a positive light, this action is like spring cleaning, or perhaps moving, where old patterns are disrupted and a whole new structure or way of life replaces one that has been outgrown. If we are awake, and paying attention, this feels like positive change. If we have been asleep, or in denial, it can feel like Dorothy being swept up in a cyclone and dropped in the alien land of Oz. Taking another view, astrologer and scholar of myth, Richard Tarnas, has argued convincingly that Prometheus, the Titan who stole fire for humanity, is a better name for Uranus because of his revolutionary mythic character. Tarnas believes that the name Uranus arose from conventional eighteenth-century logic, not from archetypal insight. After the planet’s discovery astrologers studied the horoscopes of people who had Uranus emphasized. The character of the planet’s influence does not resonate with the nature of the myth. Prometheus, whose name means “foresight,” was a benefactor to humankind and in some stories actually created humans on a potter’s wheel. It was Athena, goddess of wisdom, who taught Prometheus much of what he knew and who actually breathed life into his creations. In some stories he tricked Zeus and earned his ire, which prompted Zeus to take fire from humanity in spite. But Prometheus lit a torch from the Sun and restored fire to humanity. Prometheus also prophesied the downfall of Zeus/Jupiter at the hands of ancient female powers of justice (karma). Uranus manity.” Pluto represents destruction, transformation and renewal, and unlike Uranus, its effect is slow and ruthless. Some might argue that Pluto’s demotion to dwarf planet status has diminished his role in astrology and his potential for significance. Even for those inclined to give astrology credence; the idea that a small body at a great distance can have any real effect seems unlikely. Paradoxically, Pluto now seems to act in the manner of homeopathy where the more diluted solution increases the potency of the medium. It’s speculated that this homeopathic effect is caused by action on the energetic field, not the physical, implying a more potent influence at the causal stage. In a recent study, Professor Luc Montagnier and his team reported the results of a series of rigorous experiments investigating the electromagnetic properties of highly diluted biological samples. The study demonstrated that some bacterial DNA sequences are able to induce electromagnetic waves at high aqueous dilutions. This appears to be a resonance phenomenon triggered by the ambient electromagnetic background of very low frequency waves. The researchers used aqueous solutions that were agitated and serially diluted. The researchers noted that the solutions were 'strongly agitated' and that this step was critical for the generation of signals. Although the word 'homeopathy' was not mentioned, this is an apt description of generating homeopathic potencies. In myth Hades, whose name means “unseen” was the Greek god of the underworld. Hades was also called Pluton, the “rich one,” which the Romans later Latinized as Pluto. In Greek, plutos means wealth. Pluto can be seen as an agent of evolutionary metamorphosis and presents profound teachings about the nature of power. Uranus paired with Pluto forces change, and resistance only makes the explo- sion bigger. In the wake of what can seem like literal or symbolic death and devastation, true wealth, the intangibles that really matter, can be revealed. Pluto often gets a bum rap. He is lord of the underworld, and the land of the dead is not an inviting place. But the more ancient myths tell us that this was a place of rest and renewal before a new cycle of resurrection, and the meaning of his name hints that there is buried treasure. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung asserted that material concealed in shadow, the underworld of our psyches, is not diminished but rather is strengthened by this position. Unless consciously recognized and dealt with, this material arises in the form of dreams, nightmares, complexes, or even psychoses. Uranus acting together with Pluto may offer a key to unlocking unseen but powerful material that resides in the shadow realm. Following Tarnas, Uranus as Prometheus can hold his fiery torch high, lighting the way as we consciously undertake a journey to Pluto’s realm. If we are brave, we are offered the truth and can uncover what’s been buried or in the shadow. What we do with the truth is up to us.
