Winter collaboration in the Learning
Commons
Our cowboys and cowgirls put on their boots and hats for
Western Day. They came into school with confidence and
smiles, ready to lasso learning. Students said “Howdy” to their
friends and proceeded to participate in classroom Reading
Roundups and Math Rodeos.
ST. PAULS ELEMENTARY
Our students were the highlight of the St. Pauls Night Out with performances by our talented string players and beautiful displays of
artwork. Artwork included many mediums such as sketching, painting, and paper design. The Hooks Community Building was an
Art Museum for the evening.
The school transformed into an exhibit hall that the Scientific American would be proud to feature on their cover. Our best and
brightest displayed research and experiments that astounded and amazed. Students demonstrated an in-depth understanding of
the scientific process, while asking thought-provoking questions. These future scientists are well on their way to making a positive
mark in the world.
Staff and students shared smiles and success stories as we celebrated our many achievements for the first 100 days of school.
Students marked the day with collections of 100 objects, reflective journal writing and math challenges. They also eagerly set goals
for the next 80 days.
The entire school has collaborated to tie our Common Core Standards into exciting Winter Themes. Our Kindergarteners and First
Graders have cozied up to Polar Animals, Second and Third Graders have joined the ranks of inventors and inventions, and
Fourth and Fifth graders have braved the Iditarod. Kindergarten students have explored the penguin lifecycle, and even worked on
their movement and motor skills as they practiced caring for their own egg in PE. First graders have been creating Venn diagrams
to compare and contrast polar animals as well as exploring the art of camouflage in Polar Regions. Second Graders conducted an
investigation into some of their favorite inventions in the world of toys. Students identified the properties of these inventions and
explored the relationships between properties and design. Third Grade Students participated in jigsaw learning groups as well as
working together to create trifolds representing inventions from the past, the present, and their very creative ideas for the future.
Students utilized the SCAMPER method of critical problem solving to make suggestions for improving today’s commodities for
tomorrow. Fourth grade students utilized Google Earth and various mapping tools to chart the course of the Iditarod. Fifth grade
students applied their knowledge of forces and motion to evaluate sled designs for the classic race. Fourth and Fifth grade
competed in a virtual Iditarod race in which they moved forward by correctly solving, explaining, and demonstrating various math
skills. From the classroom to music, art, PE, Computer Lab, and the Learning Commons, students have been totally immersed in 27
collaborative, integrated learning.
