Locally, United Way of
Robeson County provides
funds to 18 agencies and
65 programs working
towards the goal of
Brooke Britt - English
making life easier for
many residents of the
county. And the
needs are
many.
Illiteracy has
long been a
problem for
many
residents,
not only in
Robeson
County, but
also around
the entire
nation. In an
Kewanda Davetta Merritt
English/Language Arts
Curriculum Supervisor
effort to alleviate this
problem here, Robeson
County United Way
began a partnership in a
globally successful
program known as “Dolly
Patron Imagination
Library”. The program
mails a brand new, age
appropriate book each
month to each enrolled
child in the county from
birth until they reached
the age of five. You are
urged to go to the
website and vote for your
favorite couple. It will
cost $10 per vote, with all
proceeds raised to go to
the project. The second
annual dance event will
be held at Southeastern
Agriculture Center
(Farmer’s Market) on
March 23th. There are
10,000 children, 5 years
old and younger eligible
for the program in
Robeson County and
1300 children who are
receiving books.
Registration forms are
available at the
Lumberton Children’s
Clinic or at the United
Way office. The event
raised $146,000
last year and hopes to
surpass those figures to
offer the library to more
children. For more
