January has been and exciting
month for Kindergarten. We had
an amazing turn-out for Literacy
Night. We also had many great
activities to honor Martin Luther
King Jr.’s Birthday. Teachers and
students were excited to see
academic growth as we had our
mid-year Reading 3D
Assessments and Math
Benchmarks this year. Teachers
are currently having training and
sharing ideas in preparation for
the implementation of Daily Five.
The first grade students at East
Robeson have been busy
learning lots of new math skills
reviewing place value, addition/
subtraction with 3 addends,
greater than/less than, and
interpreting data/graphs. We had
"Literacy Night" on January 17,
2013. Parents were given a
narrative retelling sheet explaining
the story elements: setting,
characters, plot, events, problem
and solution. Our Beaver Motto: Be
Caring, Be a Thinker, Be Safe are
being incorporated on a daily basis.
Students are having fun learning
and making academic growth.
Second Graders were "busy
beavers" learning about the
contributions of Martin Luther King,
Jr. and investigating the states of
skills, using descriptive words (AKA
adjectives) in our writing, and
distinguishing between fact and
opinion were among the other
many areas we studied.
Third grade had Literacy night,
where parents were given
information about new Common
Core Standards. Students received
treat bags and beaver bucks for
attendance.Third graders are
learning how to build their stamina
in reading. We have been learning
about energy and matter in
science. In math we are learning to
use fractions. Mrs. Pittman’s class
won the PBIS incentive award for
2 nd 9 weeks. They were treated to a
New PSRC School
Exhibit Unveiled at
Exploration Station
After months of renovations, the new
School Exhibit, The Learning Zone, was
unveiled at the Exploration Station in
Lumberton. The Public Schools of Robeson
County sponsored and built the exhibit.
Administrators and educators alike walked
through the bright-red classroom like exhibit
with bright eyes. The zone has four main
areas to stir a child’s imagination. The first
area is a reading loft with books and two
cozy seating areas for students to read.
Underneath the reading loft is the “Around
the World” Center. The center has multicultural
books, puzzles, musical instruments
and the painting reflects various cultures in
Robeson County. The exhibit also has a
math center with a magnetic board and
magnetic numbers for a variety of math
activities including flashcards and games.
The art center stands out with a giant
paint brush dripping with paint. The art area
has a variety of materials, basic art concept
posters and activities to re-enforce art. The
zone has a traditional blackboard. The rugs
in the area also emphasize numbers,
Spanish words, colors and the individual
states. Dr. Johnny Hunt commended the
Exploration Center staff for helping the
counties young children. “Part of our
mission statement is building a foundation
for lifelong learning. That is only part of that
mission statement and that is what you are
doing here. However we can help and
partner together, we are willing to do that
and it shows that learning can be fun,” said
Superintendent Dr. Johnny Hunt.
The Maintenance employees at PSRC
built the exhibit. Hand painted murals at the
entrance and inside the center can’t be
missed. Arts Education Director Sandi
Carter and art teacher Barbie Coble painted
the murals which include a tree with small
children, children riding birds and children
reading. “I hope students will have fun while
learning and enjoying the space. The whole
space makes you excited about coming in
and investigating everything,” said Carter.
Exploration Station has twelve exhibits
at the center, but the director realized in the
past few years that some of the exhibits
needed to be updated. The facility worked
with business partners to sponsor the
renovations. In the Exploration Station
students can play in a pirate ship, a bank,
the School Zone, a grocery store, hospital,
playhouse and much more. Exploration
Station welcomes 19,000 visitors per year.
“We would not be able to remain the place
we are without the help from our community.
As you know times are hard and funding
has become less and less over the years,
so to be able to pull off a project like this
would not be possible without generous
donations from the public schools, Kiwanis,
and all the wonderful people in the
community who do this for us,” said
Exploration Station Director Brooke Hardee.
Green Grove Elementary
Robeson County Center has made several
visits to Green Grove to educate our
students about healthy eating habits and
proper hand washing. We are excited
about our measurement unit in math and
continue to estimate before we measure
an item.
We would like to welcome Ms.
Rhonda Cooper, first grade teacher, to our
panda family. Ms. Cooper is a 2012
graduate of UNC-Pembroke.
! The Pre-K students recently
learned all about the thrill of the circus.
Their classroom was transformed to
resemble the “Big Top” as they dressed up
like clowns and acted as ringmasters. To
experience all the excitement the circus
has to offer, they traveled to Florence Civic
Center for Ringling Brothers and Barnum
and Bailey Circus – Fully Charged. After
the show they unwound with lunch at Olive
Garden.
Winter is an exciting time for our
kindergarten pandas. We are learning
all about the animals and climate of winter.
Math is always fun, but we are super
excited about our new math workbooks.
With reading, writing and so much to learn,
we come to school prepared each morning
to be examples for others by following our
PBIS rules. Our new school nurse has
taught us about the importance of brushing
and flossing our teeth. We look forward to
hearing the black history fact of the day as
we celebrate Black History Month. Ms.
Christy Strickland, Extension Family and
Consumer Sciences Agent with the NC
Cooperative Extension, Robeson County
Center visited our kindergarten and pre-k
classes recently to discuss the importance
of healthy eating habits.
The first grade study of health and
nutrition has been enriched with the help of
Mrs. Diane Zepaltas, Community Dietitian/
Coordinator of Project health sponsored by
SRMC Community health Services. We
can eat healthy and take care of our
bodies. We have been busy studying
Black Americans during Black History
Month to celebrate and remind us of their
contribution to society. We are also
learning more about composite shapes
and equal shares.
! Mrs. Janice Fields, Extension
family and consumer sciences agent with
North Carolina Cooperative Extension,
Dr. Gene Freeman and his daughter,
Alexandria, recently visited the third
grade classes. Dr. Freeman is
Superintendent for the Manheim Township
School District in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
He previously taught school at Carroll
Middle and also worked at the Central
Office. Alexandria is currently attending
Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The
teachers and students enjoyed hearing
Alexandria and Dr. Freeman read a story
as well as asking them questions. It is
always a pleasure to have visitors come
and read to our students.
Everyone who attended the February
Public Schools of Robeson County Trains With Officers
from Across the District
Safety is a top priority today as
school districts around the nation
look for ways to keep children out of
harm’s way. In January law
enforcement officers joined
educators and administrators from
the Public Schools of Robeson
County for a Crisis Intervention
Planning and Active threat
Preparation at Lumberton High
School.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s
Department hosted the training, but
officers from St. Pauls, Red
Springs, Pembroke and Lumberton
Police Department and school
resource officers also were also on
hand as the presenters looked at
ways to keep schools safer.
Stephen Gaskins, the Assistant
Superintendent of Administration
told the audience that after the
shooting at Newtown, Connecticut
he spoke with Sheriff Sealey and all
police chiefs from Robeson County
and they committed to extra patrols
for the district schools. The training
for principals, assistant principals,
teachers, counselors and school
staff was scheduled after the
Newtown shooting.
“Grades are important, test scores
are important, but the safety of our
students is most important,” said
Gaskins.
Officers talked with the school
employees about their crisis plans,
the importance of communication
with staff members during an
emergency and things to look for as
they screen for weapons at their
schools. One of the most poignant
moments of the training was a mock
video of a school shooting. The
school employees and officers
watched as teachers and students
respond to an active shooter on a
mock school campus.
Piney Grove Elementary school
counselor Anthony Locklear said his
school like many others has
recently practiced a school
lockdown. He feels the training is
beneficial to the county. “It makes
you realize not to take things for
granted. Not to ask yourself if it
could happen, but to take
precautions for it,” said Locklear.
Superintendent Johnny Hunt said
more funding is needed for
additional security measures for the
system, but in the meantime, this
training is critical to keep schools
safe. “We believe we have safe
schools in Robeson County. We
would love to have more resource
officers, more metal detectors and
more wands as you cannot do too
much to be prepared. If someone
walked into a room, would you know
what to do The officers would
know what to do, but would our
administrators know what to do,”
said Hunt.
The training also looked at the
myths, profiles and statistics about
school shooters and their victims.
Officers discussed how graphic
video games were a common
denominator among several recent
shooters.
Sheriff Kenneth Sealey stressed to
school employees the importance of
reporting any threat to his office. “If
a child tells you they were
threatened or threatened someone,
take them seriously. Take it
seriously. They could hurt someone
or even kill a teacher. We are there
to work with you,” said Sheriff
Sealey.
As officers finished the training,
school team members were asked
to break into groups to discuss
evacuation plans or any major
problem areas.
Union Chapel Elementary School
principal Virginia Emanuel said her
school is in the process of planning
for a lockdown and the discussions
of weakness points in the schools
are timely. “We discussed what to
do in case we have to move
children. For example in the event
of a disaster or RR Track
emergency, feeder schools will need
to send buses to schools to pick up
students if we needed to move
them,” said Emanuel.
Educators such as Emanuel say
they are glad to see a team effort
between law enforcement and the
school educators at such a crucial
time.
The Public Schools of Robeson
County will continue to have SWAT
team members from the Robeson
County Sheriff’s Department to walk
through and assess their schools in
the coming weeks as the district
works to cover all areas of safety.
Parent Coordinator
Offers Tools for Student Success
Amy Haigler talks study
habits, test skills and even
what jobs are in a student’s
future. As the Parent
Involvement Coordinator for
the Public Schools of
Robeson County she carries
an arsenal of supplies and
tips to arm parents to help
their children be successful.
Haigler says helping parents
to see the importance of
supporting their children is
one of the most important
goals in the district. “When a
parent is not engaged our
children give up a lot easier
because they don’t feel they
have that avenue to go to.
Sometimes children feel like
they understand what the
teacher was talking about,
but then at home may need
more
or
reinforcement
help,” say
Haigler.
Amy Haigler
became the Parent
Coordinator for the Public
Schools of Robeson County
in 2006 when the district was
looking for ways to share
information with parents.
Amy Haigler is always real.
This long time educator
carries a high level of respect
as she goes throughout the
district collaborating and
working with parents….but
overall pushing the message
of parental involvement.
The program began with a
monthly parent night with a
live satellite link with the US
Department of education
meeting at UNCP. Today the
monthly meetings draw close
to 300 parents and students.
The meetings are more than
just information. Haigler
brings a light air to the
monthly meetings with a
cross of humor and good
common sense. She also
spotlights excellence at the
meetings such as A-B Honor
Roll students receive extra
goodies. Everyone leaves
the monthly meeting with
items to help students. The
children receive books at
check-in. Parents can pick
out a gift at the end of the
meeting. “It also gave us an
opportunity to provide
parents with
materials and
information they
may not have.
One year we
ordered all parents
a parenting/
Haigler speaks to parents
homework dictionary, which
is a cheat sheet which
reviews the basic subjects of
math, social studies, English
and science,” said Haigler.
Haigler’s parental support
goes beyond the monthly
meeting. She meets with
parents at individual schools
as well as community
meetings. She says parents
need to reinforce the things
children are learning on a
daily basis at school. “We
also need them to partner
with the schools to help
children understand the
value of an education,” said
Haigler.
Amy Haigler has worked in
the PSRC district for 30 plus
years. She taught Social
Studies for grades 7 – 12 for
20 years in St. Pauls, then
worked at the Central Office
as an Instructional Generalist
before becoming the Parent
Involvement Coordinator.
Today the most gratifying
part of her work is reaching
out to parents. “We
encourage parents to take
advantage of all
opportunities to learn. They
can do it in a grocery store,
have your child read road
signs, calculate how much
you are spending in stores,
there are so many
opportunities for parents to
work with children throughout
the day. It doesn’t have to be
at home at the dinner table
doing homework,” said
Haigler.
The PSRC Parent Student
Center will soon be featured
across the state in a Parent
and Community Engagement
Video on the N.C.
Department of Public
Instruction website. It will
illustrate what effective
parent involvement should
be.
placed 4th at the
National Engineers
Week Future City
Competition in North
Carolina. This event
was held on January
27, 2013.
The students began
this event in August
2012. Their
competition challenge
involved the following:
Build a computerized
city using SimCity 4
software. In order to
qualify the students
must have a city in the
year 2150 or higher and
a population of 50,000
people or more without
any debt before
November 17, 2012.
This year we had two
cities Katharos with
populations over
94,479ing the year
2265 and Pristine with
population 94.266 in
the year 2239.
Next the students had
to take an engineer
challenge and research
a real-world problem
and define a solution.
This year the engineer
challenge was to fix
Storm Water Runoff.
The students had to
write two essays the
first one was a narrative
describing their city
and the second one
was a research paper
defining the solution to
the runoff problem.
Katharos’ solution was
Permeable pavements
and Pristine’s solution
was harvesting water
systems. Before
December 21, 2012
Both teams had to
build a physical model
of the city using
recycled material to a
scale. And prepare an
oral presentation of
their city and the
solution to present on
January 27, 2013
It was originally
scheduled for January
26. Due to winter
weather conditions the
event was held the
following day on
Sunday at the
We have journeyed through the classrooms, halls, and
outside finding objects to measure and debating on our
best measuring tool. We have calculated inches,
centimeters, feet, yards, and meters. We have even built
giants with our monstrous measuring skills, as well as
snacking on stretched out gummy worms. Measurement
TIP OF THE DAY
Your Best Defense
A strong immune system
is one of your best
defenses against
infections from bacteria,
viruses and other health
problems like arthritis
and certain types of
cancer. Eating a variety
of nutrient-rich foods
every day will give your
body the nutrition it
needs to help protect
against illness and
reduce your risk of
chronic disease.
By choosing foods that
provide the most
nutrients per calorie, you
can create healthy habits
that will benefit your
health now and for the
rest of your life:
1. Start each day with a
healthy breakfast that
includes whole grains and
foods packed with calcium,
vitamin D and vitamin C.
2. Replace refined grains
with whole grains like
whole-‐grain breads, cereals
and brown rice.
3. Pre-‐washed salad greens
and pre-‐cut vegetables
make great quick meals or
snacks.
4. Choose fresh, frozen or
canned whole fruit for
snacks and desserts.
5. Don’t forget beans,
which are rich in fiber,
folate and flavanoids.
One teacher has gone as far as
challenging her students to gain
more AR points than her every
week; if a student does beat her in
AR points then they are granted
permission to pie her. That’s right
giving her a pie in the face. This
can happen every week in her
class. This student has succeeded
and she was given the pie. Go
1st Grade
We have been busy working
like bees and caterpillars
this month. We are learning
about the differences
between frogs and toads,
and we are digging deeper
into the ways they affect our
environment. First grade is
enjoying the nonfiction
reading and research that
we are doing in class. Our
students have had a lovely
time participating in BB's for
Reading! We plan to have
even more fun in February
digging into our integrated
units!
2nd Grade
We are continuing to work
diligently in second grade.
We just received our new
math books and are excited
about having our own books
and being able to use them.
Each month we are reading
to achieve our monthly goal
to be able to meet the
requirements for our BB
party. Our numbers are
rising and teachers and
students are excited about it
as well. Valentine's Day is
right around the corner and
President's Day as well. We
are not only celebrating the
holidays, we are learning the
meaning of why the days
were made into holidays and
about the presidents.
February is a short month
with a lot of things going on
and a whole lot to learn.
5th Grade
5th grade students are
an awesome bunch! More
than 30 students
participated in the Books
Students are learning about
genetics. Which genes are
dominant Black History
Month is always a time to
reflect. We will be viewing a
play about Harriet Tubman
and the Underground
Railroad. Children are
excited to see the
production. During math
class, children are learning
about fractions. Believe it or
not, the larger the
denominator, the smaller the
piece!
6th Grade
We are gearing up for
the EOG! Students are
preparing for their
test by reviewing
skills and concepts
in each content
area. 6TH grade
recently participated
in our annual
Science Fair.
Several winners
were announced in the
grade level. They just
finished a unit on the Solar
System and are ready to
learn about Energy! Math
classes have just learned
about equation and
expressions. Soon they will
be beginning a unit on ratios
and proportions. Then it’s
on to Geometry. In Social
Studies they are completing
a unit on Ancient Greece.
Lastly, for the English
Language Arts block, they
are continuing their unit on
Trials and Tribulations that
focuses on the Civil Rights
Movement. All the classes
are working diligently
towards learning their goals,
objectives and standards
Creating Family Trees
5th Grade has been learning
about genetics. They learned
about inherited and acquired
traits. They also learned
about dominate and
recessive genes. At the
conclusion of this study
students created Family Tree
Albums. Students were able
to share with their
classmate’s family photos,
stories and shared traits
between family members.
Seventh Grade Project
Students enjoyed the cellular
unit by creating 3-D models
of either a plant or cell
animal. Some students even
took the topic to the next
level by creating a lyrical
version of their knowledge
titled “Song for Animal Cell”.
Below are the lyrics to the
song:
“These are the organelles of
the animal cell.
The cytoplasm surrounds the
nucleus.
The mitochondria
powerhouse supplies energy.
The golgi apparatus makes
and transports protein.
These are the organelles of
the animal cell. Yeah, yeah
Peterson Elementary School
Pre- Kindergarten News
The Pre-K classroom have
been having so much fun but
learning through it all. A lot of
our learning takes places
through hands on
experiences and teaching our
students to be observant
through the learning process.
Our literacy focus this was on
the book Chick-a Chick-a
Boom Boom. The students
made coconut trees and put
the letters of the name on
tree. So many of our
students have made
progress in learning the
letters in their names. One
activity we have been
working on the letter S and it
phonemic sound so in our
sand/water table we put a
magic grow snake in it. The
longer you leave the magic
grow snake in the water the
more it grows and our
students are very eager to
measure its growth each day.
So each day as a class we
take the snake out and
measure his growth with the
measuring tape. So while
working on letters we are
becoming aware of numbers
and how to measure. In the
art center students were
given the opportunity to make
snakes and as some
students were engaged in
there activity they were able
to tell you what letter snake
started with as well as the
sound.
What exciting time we
had as we celebrated the
100th day of School. Ms.
Jessica Leonard,
kindergarten teacher,
shared a very special
guest. Her Great
Grandfather, Mr. Welton
Harrington, 100 years old,
spoke about a lot of different
things happening throughout
his life. Adam Berry and
Deimyiah Smith were excited
to see him and hear about
him. Learning about history
is adventurous for us as we
have also been learning Black
History and all the important
people who have paved the
way for us today.
Our great group of First
Graders has been discussing
all types of changes in the
world around us and even in
our own lives. We made
timelines of our lives and
brought in pictures of
ourselves when we were
babies. Boy, we sure look
different! We are working
hard to get ready for our
Curriculum Fair. Our projects
were so much fun! Wow! We
can’t wait to see what the
winds blow in as spring is
upon us.
Second graders are eagerly
awaiting their field trip to the
Ringling Brothers and
Barnum and Bailey Circus in
Fayetteville. Students are
learning through math and
reading skills how the show is
put together and the
performers will perform. We
are working diligently every
day to show growth in all
areas: Accelerated Reading/
Math Tests, Mid-year Math
Assessment, Writing Tests
and the Middle of the year
Reading 3-D Assessment.
Through all this, look out
spring here we come!
Third Grade has been
studying about biographies in
Reading this nine weeks. We
are doing research on various
famous Americans and will
have a Wax Museum
presentation at the end of
February. Excitement is in the
air to hear all the reports and
to see the famous people.
Our “Dino”-mite Fourth
graders has been very busy
studying Magnetism, North
Carolina’s Statehood and
Dental Health. Students who
earned their incentive for
PBIS attended a school
dance to celebrate positive
behaviors. We are proud of
our students and their
accomplishments.
Rowland Middle School Students, Staff and Community Celebrate
Vonta Leach’s road to the Super Bowl
Rowland Middle School joined in the Super Bowl celebrations with a 200 cupcake party, posters
and Super Bowl shirts to show Vonta Leach. School principal Shanita Wooten said the school wanted
to show Vonta how proud the school is of him and that they are supporting him. The staff and students
ordered special shirts for the Super Bowl celebration and put up Vonta posters throughout the school.
Some of the shirts say “The Cobras Got his back 44”. The Rowland Middle School mascot is the
Cobras. The shirts started a trend as people throughout Rowland and all across the county started to
order them. Two days before the big bowl, 20 of the shirts were taken to New Orleans by Vonta’s
mother, Jackie.
Teachers at South Robeson HS and Southside Ashpole also joined in the celebration with shirts.
Vonta is from Rowland and attended all three of the Rowland Schools through his school years.
Principal Wooten said Vonta is a hometown hero to and the school wanted to show him that they
are proud of him and supporting him. “He has made donations for sports, uniforms, a safety ID
machine and educational software programs this year,” said Wooten.
The Rowland educators and students celebrated throughout the weekend and held a victory
celebration on Monday after the Superbowl.
Our young scientists are
exploring how energy flows
through food chains and food
webs. They used newspaper
clippings to design their own
food chains. They enjoyed a
rap about symbiosis that
featured mutualism,
commensalism and parasitism.
We are in the process of setting
up a science lab for our
students. With this lab we will
be able to have more
experiments and give our
students the full experience of
science exploration.
The Science department is
starting a science club called
the “Smartdogs”. Our young
scientists will be diving deeper
into science in afterschool labs
and activities. We will also be
exploring science careers.
Our annual science fair is
Pre-K
Pre-k is learning about
Black History we made 3-D
picture of Martin L. King and
learned that he wanted equal
rights for everyone!!! We
also learned about
Community Helpers. We will
be visiting LOWE"s Food on
Feb. 26,2013. This is a busy
month we talk about Dental
Health and had a visitor
come an share the important
of taking care of our teeth!!
GO PRE-K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been super
busy during the month of
February. We began the
month with a lesson about
the groundhog and were
able to experiment with
some shadow making. We
celebrated 100 Days of
School by bringing in a
collection of 100 items to
share with the class. We
have learned about African
American inventors,
Abraham Lincoln and
George Washington. These
famous people played a
major role in our lives and
we have learned how they
helped to change the world
in which we live. We are
learning our sight words and
beginning to write simple
sentences on our own. We
can’t wait to begin our Spring
Unit. There is always fun
with planting, insects and
Easter.
3rd Grade
Black History Month is an
opportunity to emphasize the
history and achievements of
many African Americans and
it allows teachers to integrate
Black History into
their February lesson plans.
Many of the Web-based
activities below were
a perfect complement to our
new CCSS curriculum!
Batter up! Focused on the
progress of integration in
baseball, and a salute to
heroes of the Negro League.
Students chose a player
they already knew about and
designed a "Valentine Day"
baseball card for him.
Dream a little dream. Martin
Luther King Jr. didn't dream
little dreams. He had a very
great dream -- one of
equality, justice, and peace.
Our students also have
dreams, for themselves, their
families, and their country.
We allowed students the
opportunity to share their
dreams using the "I Have a
Dream Too" writing poster
board. Many of our students
were very creative with their
work. We also listened and
filled in the correct words to
the I Have a Dream Speech.
Oral history. Students
were responsible for
interviewing neighbors and
relatives to learn about their
experiences and compare
them with the experiences of
today's young people. Some
of our students used old
recorders, iphones, and
ipads etc. to complete this
project.
Our 3rd grade students
enjoyed the activities and
sharing of such a great
wealth of vital information
during Black History Month.
30
West Lumberton Elementary
PBIS had a school dance on
Thursday, February 14th as
an incentive. A photo booth
was available for students
who wanted to take a
Valentine picture at a small
charge. Proceeds will go to
buy items for the PBIS store.
Everyone had a great time.
Kindergarten
Our kindergarten has been
busy this month finishing up
our Science unit on “Winter.”
We discussed what types of
clothing we wear in winter and
the fun things we can do in
the snow. Unfortunately, we
haven’t had any snow day to
discuss. We talked about
Martin Luther King Jr. and the
impact he made on our
country. We also watched
videos on his life and did
other scholastic activities.
In Language Arts, the
students are taking spelling
test on kindergarten and First
grade words. For each word
spelled correctly, the students
receive a dolphin. They love
receiving dolphins and can
exchange them at the dolphin
store for treats.
First Grade
First graders are busy little
bees reading, reading, and
reading. We are happy to
have the Reading 3D
benchmark behind us and we
are seeing growth in our
students’ ability to read and
gain meaning from what they
are reading. Students
completed a unit on penguins
learning facts about the
animal, its habitat, and
compared it to animals they
already know about. Students
use informational texts to
gather evidence and complete
opened-ended statements.
Students are writing poems,
narrative, and informational
texts on winter themes.
Students are also learning to
express their opinion about a
book and support their opinion
with evidence from the book.
We are currently beginning a
unit on animals. In
cooperative groups, students
are choosing an animal in a
habitat to research and report
on. This is new for first
graders at this point in the
year but they are excited. We
continue to build our math
vocabulary with new words
partition, unknown, and
defining and non-defining. Our
students are
improving their ability
to add and subtract in
multiple ways and
seem to feel good
about their ability to
use a symbol in a
math equation to
represent the
unknown. YAY for first
graders learning
through common
core!! We continue to
find engaging lessons
on how to promote
health and fitness.
Third Grade
Third Grade is zooming
through the school year. We
are excited about learning
new information in the months
ahead. This month we are
celebrating Black History
Month. We are looking
forward to researching about
important African Americans
who have made a difference
in our world. Also our class
celebrated the 100th day of
school by doing some fun
activities in the classroom.
Our students worked hard in
teams to create a tower of
100 cups. We also designed
pictures using the numbers
1-0-0. We are gearing up to
prepare for the end of the
school year. Our students are
participating in after-school
tutoring to receive more
instruction to better meet their
needs. We are looking
forward to the days ahead!
County United Way
began a partnership in a
globally successful
program known as “Dolly
Patron Imagination
Library”. The program
mails a brand new, age
appropriate book each
month to each enrolled
child in the county from
birth until they reached
the age of five. You are
urged to go to the
website and vote for your
favorite couple. It will
cost $10 per vote, with all
proceeds raised to go to
the project. The second
annual dance event will
be held at Southeastern
Agriculture Center
(Farmer’s Market) on
March 23th. There are
10,000 children, 5 years
old and younger eligible
for the program in
1300 children who are
receiving books.
Registration forms are
available at the
