St. Pauls Middle School SPMS CHESS TEAM 2012-2013 Zaveyan, Zaihein, John, Decklin, Coach Patterson, Maria, Skylar, Anthony, Erick, Shakira, & Alex (Not Pictured: Noah, Armoni and Coach Orchard) The 2012-2013 St. Pauls Middle School Chess Team is composed of 12 student members and two coaches. Zaihein pictured second on the left and Skylar second on the right are SPES student team mascots. Coaches: Lisa Patterson and Timm Orchard. Members compete against each other every Wednesday after school from 3 to 4pm. We are challenging all middle schools in Robeson County to come over to the doghouse and compete against the Mighty Bulldog Chess Team. Battle of the Books Club The members of the Battle of the Books Club are preparing daily for the middle school district competition in March at Lumberton Jr. High School. They are busy reading, taking accelerated reader quizzes, memorizing author and titles, completing story maps, and competing between themselves to prepare for the competition. Excitement is growing as the competition is rapidly approaching. Accelerated Reader Club Congratulation goes to Accelerated Reader Classroom Champions, Mr. Weller’s Core 2 Language Arts class, for earning 556.7 AR points for the 2nd nine weeks. The students shopped with their AR points and will celebrate with ice cream. Students are excited about reading and earning AR points to become an AR Club Member. The 1st Semester highest (100 and 200 club member) AR club members by grade level are: 6th Grade Kyle Edward 194.1 7th Grade Anne Johnson 215.8 8th Gr. Hunter Lanterman 207.3 Congratulation students! Let’s keep reading and taking AR quizzes. 8th Grade Science Department Our young scientists are exploring how energy flows through food chains and food webs. They used newspaper clippings to design their own food chains. They enjoyed a rap about symbiosis that featured mutualism, commensalism and parasitism. We are in the process of setting up a science lab for our students. With this lab we will be able to have more experiments and give our students the full experience of science exploration. The Science department is starting a science club called the “Smartdogs”. Our young scientists will be diving deeper into science in afterschool labs and activities. We will also be exploring science careers. Our annual science fair is scheduled for April 15th 2013. Our students use their science expertise to design their own experiments and showcase them in the science fair. AIG News St. Pauls Middle School AIG students have been striving for excellence through many challenging opportunities. AIG Reading students recently submitted essays to the Robeson County Library "Book 'Em" contest. As part of this contest, students wrote and edited personal narratives on "Inspirations". These students also recently were awarded American Basketball Association tickets through the International Association of Reading Fast-Break for Reading Campaign. AIG math students have been sharpening their graphing and presentation techniques by creating graphs with Excel and attaching them to Power Point presentations. Congratulations to our first SPMS newspaper staff here at St. Pauls Middle School! Chief Editor is Hunter Lanterman who will finalize all written articles before print. William Hammond will entertain you with his personal point of views using his sense of humor on opinions and current events. Running down the sideline catching all of our sports news will be Rodney Lowe who will give you all the spins of events involving sports and related issues. Felicia Sanchious will use her personal views and touches with Yessenia Trevino as the assistant chief editor and writer of local events and fashion. The first issue is underway so look out for it soon. Beta Club The SPMS Junior Beta Club enrolled 23 new members during its 2013 Beta Club Induction Program on Thursday, January 31, 2013, from 6 – 8 PM, in the SPMS cafeteria. Inductees, parents, guests, guardians, faculty and staff were entertained by the SPMS string orchestra, directed by Ms. Peggy Marshall; by songstresses, Patricia Daniels-Wright, SPMS Teacher’s Assistant, and Heather Jacobs, 2013 Jr. Beta Club President. An all-inspiring speech was given by Mr. Frederick McKinnon, Retired PSRC Assistant Superintendent, as Mrs. Roxanne acted as Mistress of ceremony. Inductees included: Jaida Allen, Darren Bowen, Kyle Edwards, Anthony Espinosa, Haley Gibson, Alexis Jackson, Stephen Johnson, Tatyana Locklear, Antonio Lopez, Aurora Lopez, Juan Martinez, Mario Martinez, Chasity McClay, G’Shearia McNeill, Flor Orozco, Michaela Parker, Zaveyan Pearson, Destanie Plancarte, Aaron Revels, Nasira Robinson, Kourtney Sanchious, Abdiel Tapia, Erick Torres, and Azi Williams. At the conclusion of program, the crowd enjoyed a wonderful candlelight ceremony, after which all were able to partake in a delicious meal catered by Mrs. Earlene White, of St. Pauls, NC. 28

The SAVE Chapter members at this elementary school created a “Pledge Wall” that the students used to pledge their commitment to take a stand against bullying and show that there is zero tolerance for bullying at the school and in the community. The SAVE Chapter at Union Chapel School is facilitated by Ms. Lena Michelle Lowry – School Counselor and Ms. Rebecca Chavis-Nolley – P.E. Teacher.
