Program<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

Candidates for admission into the Associate of Science<br />

in Nursing Program must make application to the<br />

Admissions Office at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. All candidates are<br />

required to meet the following high school requirements:<br />

• four units of English<br />

• three units of social studies<br />

• two units of science: one year of chemistry with a<br />

grade of “C” or better and one year of biology with a<br />

grade of “C” or better within five years of date of<br />

entry.<br />

• two units of mathematics (one must be algebra with<br />

a grade of “C” or better and one course may be algebra<br />

II, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus). These<br />

courses must have been taken within five years of<br />

date of entry.<br />

Candidates who do not meet all the high school<br />

requirements must take the following courses. A grade of<br />

“C” or better must be earned.<br />

1. To satisfy the social studies requirement, an<br />

individual must complete a history course (e.g.,<br />

United States, western civilization; not history of art<br />

or music).<br />

2. To satisfy the science requirement, an individual<br />

must complete BIOL 111 and PHSC 111 or CHEM<br />

153 and 163. (College credits for the sciences are<br />

acceptable only if they have been earned within 10<br />

years of admission.)<br />

3. To satisfy the mathematics requirement, an<br />

individual must take the university mathematics<br />

placement test. Based on the results of this exam,<br />

the individual will either be exempt from MATH 050<br />

or be required to take MATH 050. College credits<br />

for mathematics are acceptable only if they have been<br />

earned within 10 years of admission.<br />

4. To satisfy the English requirement all students must<br />

take ENG 111 or ENG 110 (if placed) and ENG 111.<br />

The university requires all entering students to take<br />

a placement test in order to determine whether they<br />

need to take a developmental course prior to taking<br />

ENG 111, the course needed to graduate from <strong>Clarion</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>. People who are placed in ENG 110<br />

(Writing I) must complete this course in order to take<br />

ENG 111 (Writing II).<br />

Admission Policies for Entrance<br />

Applicants who satisfy all of the high school criteria<br />

will be considered for admission into the A.S.N. Program.<br />

Admission procedures for the A.S.N. Program include:<br />

1. completing a university application or a Change of<br />

Status Form by the designated dates;<br />

2. completing an essay (250 words or less) which<br />

addresses the applicant’s interest in the nursing<br />

profession;<br />

3. requesting an official high school transcript and<br />

official transcripts from any previously attended<br />

colleges and/or universities to be sent to the<br />

Admissions Office;<br />

4. attending an informational session related to<br />

<strong>Clarion</strong>’s nursing programs;<br />

5. taking the NLN Pre-Entrance Tests (LPNs and<br />

applicants with bachelor degrees are exempt);<br />

6. meeting the accepted admission criteria in high<br />

school class rank, admission scores in SAT/ACT, or<br />

holding a four-year college/university degree; and<br />

7. achieving a QPA of 2.00 or better in high school and/<br />

or college.<br />

Articulation Policy<br />

Licensed practical nurses who have graduated within<br />

three years from an NLNAC-accredited nursing program<br />

are eligible for direct articulation into <strong>Clarion</strong>’s A.S.N.<br />

program. Individuals who have graduated between three<br />

and 10 years prior to application must have 1,000 hours of<br />

nursing practice within the last three years for direct<br />

articulation. Special arrangements are made for individuals<br />

who have:<br />

(1) graduated from a non-NLNAC accredited nursing<br />

program;<br />

(2) practiced nursing less than 1,000 hours within three<br />

years of application;<br />

(3) graduated from a NLNAC-accredited nursing<br />

program more than 10 years ago.<br />

Although the Associate of Science in Nursing is designed<br />

to be completed in two academic years, part-time study is<br />
