<strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Regulation</strong><br />

Introduction<br />

In 2005, <strong>the</strong> Ontario Government passed <strong>the</strong> <strong>Accessibility</strong> for Ontarians with<br />

Disabilities Act <strong>to</strong> make Ontario accessible by 2025.<br />

<strong>Accessibility</strong> standards have been created as part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Accessibility</strong> for<br />

Ontarians with Disabilities Act. These standards are rules that businesses and<br />

organizations in Ontario need <strong>to</strong> follow <strong>to</strong> identify, remove and prevent barriers<br />

so that people with disabilities have more opportunities <strong>to</strong> participate in everyday<br />

life.<br />

The <strong>Accessibility</strong> Standard for Cus<strong>to</strong>mer Service was <strong>the</strong> first standard <strong>to</strong><br />

become law.<br />

The next three standards – Information and Communications, Employment, and<br />

Transportation – have been combined under one regulation, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Integrated</strong><br />

<strong>Accessibility</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Regulation</strong>. This regulation is now law and <strong>the</strong><br />

requirements currently in regulation are being phased in between 2011 and<br />

2021.<br />

An accessibility standard for <strong>the</strong> built environment (buildings and outdoor spaces)<br />

is in development and is not yet law.<br />

Why <strong>Accessibility</strong> It’s Just Good Business<br />

By 2031, over 6 million people in Ontario will be ei<strong>the</strong>r living with a disability<br />

or be 55 years of age and over, accounting for 40% of all income<br />

As boomers age, it is expected that <strong>the</strong>y will drive society <strong>to</strong> meet <strong>the</strong>ir needs<br />

and demands<br />

This is a huge demographic that cannot be ignored<br />

By learning how <strong>to</strong> serve people with disabilities, businesses may attract<br />

more cus<strong>to</strong>mers, build cus<strong>to</strong>mer loyalty and improve <strong>the</strong>ir services for<br />

everyone<br />

With <strong>the</strong> aging population, consumers are increasingly represented by <strong>the</strong><br />

disability community<br />
