About Self-Service Kiosks<br />

In this requirement, kiosk is used <strong>to</strong> describe an interactive electronic terminal<br />

including a point-of-sale device that <strong>the</strong> public can use <strong>to</strong> access one or more<br />

services or products, or both.<br />

People use self-service kiosks for various purposes including paying for fares<br />

and parking, as well as for validating tickets and checking prices. Kiosks are also<br />

used as self-service checkouts in many retail s<strong>to</strong>res <strong>to</strong>day.<br />

Most self-service kiosks allow people <strong>to</strong> complete transactions through point-ofsale<br />

devices using a debit, credit or o<strong>the</strong>r electronic funds card.<br />

Example: A self-serve kiosk that uses <strong>to</strong>uch-screen technology may be difficult,<br />

or impossible, <strong>to</strong> use for people who are blind or have low-vision unless an<br />

alternate (non-visual) mode of operation, such as an accessible tactile keyboard,<br />

is made available.<br />
