A similar position was held by Chris Clark, a former counselor. According to Eirin Grimes, her position differs from Clark’s by offering mental health services that are more personally oriented and that help people cope with more widespread personal issues. October 10 2011 wingspan.lccc.wy.edu New counselor to provide more personalized services Counselors are available from 8 a.m.–5 p.m., but Grimes’ individual hours are from noon- 9 p.m. Grimes said these new hours will accommodate other students in sports or other extracurricular activities whose schedules previously prevented them from seeking services. The services Grimes provides to students include help with depression, substance abuse, anxiety and roommate conflicts, which Grimes said is most common so far with new freshmen moving into the Residence Hall. The changes to counseling and campus wellness were made because of misconnection with the students, Grimes said, Previously, students and counselors met for only a 10-minute time span, so the change was made to gain a deeper connection with residential students, athletes and Residence Hall advisers. Grimes is a Laramie native, which is where she attended high school, and soon after she moved to Philadelphia, where she received her bachelor’s in business and administration at Villanova University. She earned master’s degrees in government administration at the University of Pennsylvania and counselor education at the University of Wyoming. Grimes held a job on the LCCC campus as an academic adviser before she moved Eirin Grimes to the new position as a mental health counselor. “Your first year in college, especially if you are a Residence Hall student living on campus, can be the hardest thing you experience in college life, considering you’re away from home, and these new people are almost forced to become your new family and friends,” Grimes said. “It is my primary job to let you all know that you are not alone with any issues you are struggling with, so stop by my office, and I will see that your needs are dealt with in a healthy, responsible manner, with the correct amount of time dedicated to any conflicts you may be having.” Grimes’ office is situated across the hall from where student IDs are issued or diagonally across the hall from the Emporium. October 10, 2011 wingspan.lccc.wy.edu ASG, student veterans planning 11-11-11 event By Shawn Havel Co-Editor Laramie County Community College’s Associated Student Government and a student who is a U.S. military veteran will work together to create an event to honor LCCC’s veterans and allow students to show their appreciation toward veterans at the college. On Tuesday, Sept. 27, ASG met with Mike Santana about the formation of the Veterans Association of America. ASG has been in the process of planning an event for Veterans’ Day by having each member think of at least two ideas for the holiday, which will fall on 11/11/11 this year. In other business, LCCC’s vice president of administration and finance, Carol Hoglund, will seek ASG member’s input on the new furniture that will be purchased for the lounge area at LCCC. On Sept. 20 ASG decided to hold a social bash so that they could become more approachable to the student population on Oct. 11 where students can mingle among their peers while acquainting themselves with ASG members. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the student lounge. Student government plans to follow up in the coming weeks on the scholarship proposal it previously addressed as well as to create an ad hoc committee to address issues concerning the spring book scholarships, which will be unavailable to students in 2012. On Oct. 3 ASG will work on an upcoming project with HIV prevention program manager Robert Johnston from the governor’s office to create an HIV awareness event. Last summer Skills U.S.A. went to a national competition in Kansas City, Mo., with Gerald Stoffel in automotive collision technology and Jason Christenson in automotive technology. Stoffel finished 23th overall, and Christenson finished 27th overall. The events the club held last year were an oil change as part of the LCCC Free 4 All; a drive-in movie night and a car show.
