The Laramie
County Community
College women’s volleyball
team won two
home matches during
the weekend of Sept.
30–Oct. 1 against
Dawson Community
College and Sheridan
College, putting their
Region IX record at
2–5.
The Eagles closed
out the first game of
the match quickly and
never looked back.
They finished the
night off by sweeping
the match against
Dawson Community
College 3–0, by the
scores of 25–10, 25–12
and 25–18.
The second night
began a little rough.
During the second
game, the Golden
Eagles caught some
steam and got into a
rhythm. The Eagles
took the match with
a three-game comeback,
finishing the
night by the scores of
17–25, 25–7, 25–9, and
25–16.
Freshman Callie
Colden summed it
up. “We came to play
and came to win,”
defensive specialist
Colden said.
The Golden Eagles
moved a game closer
to the upper half of
the conference play
after the weekend’s
matches.
During the second
half of September, the
Eagles spent most of
their time on the road,
playing four matches
and a tournament.
After starting 0–2
against Northwest
College, Sept. 16, and
Central Wyoming
College, Sept. 17, on
the road, the team
was able to regroup
and play “in the moment,”
Coach Darren
Buckner said.
The Golden Eagles
got things going at
Air Force Prep, Sept.
19, where they won
the match 3–1. The
Golden Eagles, fresh
off the win, then went
into the WYO-Braska
tournament and
took two of the four
matches.
The final away
match Sept. 27 against
Eastern Wyoming
College ended with
the Eagles losing in
game five 12–15.
Overall, the Golden
Eagles lost the match
3-2 by scores of 23–25,
25–18, 25–17, 22–25
and 12–15.
Laramie County
Community College men’s
and women’s rodeo team are
currently standing at eighth
and fifth, respectively, in
the Central Rocky Mountain
Region en route to hosting
the annual Shawn Dubie
Memorial rodeo Oct. 14–16.
“The hometown rodeo is
always one you want to do
well in,” LCCC Coach David
Browder said.
The LCCC rodeo team has
been gaining momentum as
the season has progressed
and will be looking to perform
at the peak of their
ability as friends and family
will attend the final rodeo of
the fall semester. However,
being athletes is not the only
responsibility that the rodeo
squad has for this tournament.
As hosts, student-athletes
will also be in charge of
running the event.
Browder said there’s
no hometown advantage
because the team will work
while they aren’t competing.
But Browder is confident
the team is capable of having
an outstanding rodeo.
“The rodeo went well last
year, so there is no reason we
can’t repeat as champions,”
Browder said.
The event will begin at
1 p.m. in the LCCC Arena.
The Shawn Dubie Memorial
Rodeo will cost $8 for adults
and $5 for students and
seniors for single day admission
or $20 for adults and $12
for student and seniors for
a three-day pass. The event
is free to LCCC students and
children under five years old.
During the first competition
of the 2011 Laramie
County Community College
equestrian season at Colby
Community College in Colby,
Kan., the LCCC equestrian
team placed sixth and fourth.
During the two-day event
on Oct. 1–2, the LCCC team
placed sixth on Saturday and
fourth on Sunday. The competition
was a Western-style
competition.
Coach Lanae Koons said:
“Overall, the team did really
well for their first competition.
There is room for
improvement, but, overall,
I am really happy with what
the team did.”
Individually, the students
competed at different ability
levels based. The riders were
ranked based on their performance
on each day. This
means a rider who placed
first and fourth placed first
Saturday and fourth Sunday.
In the beginner horsemanship
class, freshman Jessie
Johnson placed first in both
shows. Koons said this is an
accomplishment for a freshmen
rider because she is just
coming into the program and
neither the rider nor the coach
really knows what to expect.
Also in the beginner horsemanship
class, Adrian Parman
placed third in both shows,
and Lily Crawford placed fifth
and seventh.
Kayla Fisk placed fourth
and seventh in open reining.
Fisk also competed in the open
horsemanship competition,
where she placed second and
third. Jamie Johnson competed
in the open horsemanship
competition as well where she
placed sixth.
In the intermediate II
horsemanship competition
Candice Lahners placed
second and fourth; Alaina
Mikesell placed third; Sara
Eggert placed fourth and seventh;
and Annie Hoag placed
fourth.
1988. LCCC rodeo team now
pays tribute to Dubie with
his namesake annual rodeo
and by founding the Shawn
Dubie Memorial Scholarship,
awarded to an LCCC rodeo
athlete who maintaining a
2.0 grade point average. This
year the scholarship has been
awarded to Ben Julffs.
and Brittany DeMartin placed
In the novice horsemanship
Koons said Matthews
was the most improved rider
who “did well and improved
greatly” compared to last year.
Overall, Koons said she is really
happy with how well the
individuals on the team did.
The team used horses and
tack provided by the Colby
Community College.
The team’s hunt-riding
style competitors will travel
to Fort Lupton, Colo., to the
University of Colorado on Oct.
22–23. On Nov. 5–6 the team
will host a two day hunt-riding
style competition at the LCCC
campus in Cheyenne.
The team competes against
eight other colleges and universities
in Colorado, Kansas
and Nebraska.
