October 10, 2011 sports Page 37 Spark of wingspan.lccc.wy.edu BRILLIANCE By Hannah White Sports Writer The Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles men’s soccer team dropped from the national rankings after losing to Northwest College on Oct. 1 by a single goal, 5–4 in Powell, Wyoming. For the first time in the college’s history, the Golden Eagles’ men’s soccer team was nationally ranked at No. 16. The team had arrived at the Top 20 National Junior College Athletic Association rankings by beating No. 1-ranked Barton County Community College Sept. 25, 3–2 at home. Barton’s ranking dropped to No. 6 after the defeat. The Golden Eagles head coach Vince Gibson said he is proud of the team. “We are one of the few teams in junior college soccer that do it with local kids,” Gibson said. During the Barton game they only had one international player with five Wyoming players starting. Most of the other players on the team are from Colorado and Utah. “Yeah, we have internationals, but we aren’t loaded with internationals,” Gibson said. Barton County Community College has 13 international players this season. Another big competitor that is nationally ranked is Otero Junior College who is currently ranked No. 11. Prior to the Oct. 1 game vs. Northwest College, the Otero Rattlers were the only team to defeat the Golden Eagles. The Eagles will face Otero again Oct. 7 at home. 38 Wingspan sports October 10, 2011 wingspan.lccc.wy.edu Women’s soccer dominates By Hannah White Sports Writer The women’s soccer team sits just outside the national Top 10 rankings at No. 11 after winning three straight matches and drawing one. On Oct. 1 the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles tied 0–0 with Schoolcraft Community College. The Golden Eagles had 14 total shots the whole game but couldn’t put one in the goal. Schoolcraft had 12 total shots. The Golden Eagles overall record is 12-2-2. Their next game is away at Northwest College on Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. The Eagles came out with a win against thenranked No. 3 team Monroe Community College 2–1 in overtime on Monroe’s home field on Sept. 30. Monroe had the first goal of the game in the third minute. Shino Kunisawa had the Golden Eagles’ first goal to tie up the game. Vanessa Alexander scored the game winner in overtime with an assist by Monica Lubin to defeat Monroe. The Golden Eagles earned a victory over Western Nebraska Community College 5–0 on Sept. 28. Shino Kunisawa scored within the first ten minutes of the game with a pass from Junko Honda. Kunisawa had another goal shortly after that as well. The other goals in the game were scored by Jezmine Lora, Monica Lubin with an assist by Honda, and Alexander. The LCCC women’s soccer team defeated Northwest College 4–1 on Sept 24. Alexander had the first goal of the game with an assist by Lubin. Caroline Arias had two goals with one assist by Jezmine Lora. Lubin also had a goal with the assist by Kunisawa. Upcoming games will be on Oct. 12, 11 a.m., against Northwest College; Oct. 14, 2 p.m., against North Idaho College; and Oct. 16, 1 p.m., against CU Gold (nonmember school).
