WaveTrain® Systems has developed a reliable warning and safety solution for level
crossings globally, based on innovative technology
With the invention of its new
technology for level crossings,
WaveTrain ® is able to
predict the type, speed and direction of
approaching trains, and then set off either
lights, sounds or lowering of barriers as a
warning for crossing traffic.
The idea was inspired by the way
native American Indians determined
whether a train was approaching, by
listening with their ears on the tracks.
Instead of using its ears, WaveTrain ® has
developed a new technology – a standalone
system that does not interfere with
any current infrastructure, which can also
be adapted to any rail profile.
The system is installed in, or at very
close proximity to a level crossing,
requiring almost no cabling, digging
or alterations. Installation of a single
system can be done within a day, allowing
for rapid deployment on a large scale.
As a result of years of research and
development, the components are few,
robust and cost-effective, allowing an
affordable upgrading of infrastructure
safety.
Most railway accidents occur at
level crossings, so railway authorities
are looking for cost-effective solutions
that reduce timescales and, in turn, the
amount of accidents.
The system is able to increase line
operation by increasing train speed,
reducing crossing times by traffic and
pedestrians - including waiting times
at the level crossing - and reducing
installation time and blockage of
train operation. It can also be used for
purposes such as axel counters, flatwheel
detection, traffic control and rail
condition measurement.
The system does not require long
copper or power cabling between level
crossings and WaveTrain ® Systems
equipment, like prevalent conventional
solutions do. All components are either
underground or inside fixed installations,
reducing the chances of violation or theft.
A mobile version of the solution
is available, which offers significantly
increased levels of safety and efficiency
for anyone working on railroad tracks,
while reducing the amount of labour
needed for safety monitoring.
The solutions are built according to
the CENELEC standards and thereby
offer adequate client SIL requirements.
Through its quality assurance systems,
WaveTrain ® has received both product
approval and certificate.
After the recent signing of a contract
with Network Rail for a trial project,
WaveTrain ® Systems is currently working
on several tenders in countries such as
Finland, Ireland, Australia, South Africa,
Italy and Germany.
