Louise Michel was a French feminist and anarchist,
teacher and nurse. She plotted to kill Napoleon, Victor
Hugo wrote a poem about her and finally she was
exiled to New Caledonia where she spent eight years
and fought alongside the indigenous Kanuks in their
struggle for greater autonomy. The movie focuses on
her stay on the island, where French revolutionaries
try to forge out a new existence on the other side of
the planet. This is a film about the violence of authority
against its subjects, the blindness of colonialism and
an unusual co-existence between the Kanuks and the
rebels.
The glacier of Snæfellsjökull is the real lead of this film,
where Icelanders, both famous and common, speak of
their experience of the glacier and the meaning it has
to them. “Some people have a really strong bond with
this glacier and speak of it almost as if it was human,
while others simply use it to predict the weather,” Roux
says but he was surprised that Jules Verne’s story,
Journey to the Center of the Earth (where the journey
begins at Snæfellsjökull) is hardly ever mentioned and
the mountains fame seems to go deeper then that. This
is a poetic documentary and a sociological experiment,
where Friðrik Þór Friðriksson, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson
and Ari Trausti Guðmundsson and many others tell us
about the glacier.
