Uniform, Image and success
Over the past 9 months we have gone through
a very rigorous process of revising our
uniform. This is a normal process for a school
to go through but in our case it was driven by
perceptions that our community have of us.
We all know that having students looking
really good coming and going from school is
one of the main things that parents look for
when choosing schools. Our review has
produced a renewed smartness to the uniform
with options which include a blazer. We have
redesigned several items and taken on
feedback from parents and students about the
practicalities of others.
Most items have our logo on them and this
will eliminate differences in quality, style and
acceptability of uniform items that we
experience with our current uniform. Logo
items are available from PSW in Deer Park,
our official supplier, and there is an online
ordering system that will help everyone.
Over the years what is actually official
uniform has been compromised by fashion. A
uniform is a uniform and things that are not
uniform are simply not to be worn. So we will
not tolerate shoes that do not comply – they
need to be black and leather! Nor will we
tolerate girls in „face off‟ pants, they need to
tailored trousers as described on our current
list.
At the moment the staff are in a consultation
phase about the way our policy will be
implemented, results of which will be
published for all students and parents. There
will always be a process to explain why a
student is not in uniform, however we need a
cultural shift into compliance as the default
position. I am sure that every parent will
appreciate our wishes to establish order about
our uniform, including jewellery, and look
forward to your support when we implement
our policy in 2012.
More success ….
Another eventful term has passed and we keep
finding success. In this newsletter and also
the most recent Campus newsletters, there are
reports that draw your attention to recent
events. Our students are shining everywhere!
I will highlight just some with apologies to the
students and teachers I don‟t mention
Maths and Science Excellence Award
This is a very prestigious award indeed. There
is only one made in the Western Region. We
attended the award ceremony at RMIT in
August along with other regional winners.
Our work was strongly linked to our
Environment Team who are just going so well
on every level. The link to Maths and Science
is that of the 31 students who began working
with the environment team, 28 are doing at
least a VCE Science subject! Big impact.
Debating – Rumour Scotched, of course it
can be done!!
Our debating teams on both junior campuses
have had a fabulous run in competition
organised by the Victorian Debating Society.
In fact three teams reached the finals stage in
the competition and one of the Sydenham
teams lasted until the final eight pairs in the
state, being beaten by Scotch College at
Brighton late term three. Our bus driver Don
says we were robbed! Debating has been a
huge success in this its first really serious
year. Thanks to all the teachers who coach,
who are so enthusiastic and have inspired the
students.
Production
Biggest and best show ever! Anyone who saw
our production would agree that our students
are real stars. Our group this year reflected a
change as senior students who have been
mainstays in the production had to focus on
their studies and not be as prominent. So
young talent came to the fore and this
establishes a great base to build on in the
future. Thanks to Helen Jensen who leads this
part of our school, also to the writer - teacher
Eugenia Kozlevcar. I know I‟ve left out
others, including the students – well done
everyone; these events make school life great!
Kids Teaching Kids
Our Environmental Leaders again lead our
own Kids Teaching Kids conference at the
Iramoo Cntre, Victoria University. When I
say lead, I mean totally lead! The event was
attended by over 200 students from
surrounding schools – well done everyone.
Student Lead Interviews
I attended several of the student lead
interviews held late last term, including
VCAL interviews, and I‟m always
impressed by the way the students conduct
themselves. I see so many students totally
engaged in their learning and they make
their parents so proud. It‟s not unusual for
a parent to shed a tear of joy! I‟m
convinced this format is invaluable.
Getting to the end for some
This is the last newsletter that our current
year 12 students will read before they
Copperfield College and O-I Community Partnership
Earlier this year we announced our College
wide partnership with the ABCN. This is an
organisation that works with schools to
improve opportunities for students through
mentoring, partnering and support programs.
You may recall that through the ABCN we
have formed a connection with Owens
Illinois (O-I), a global glass manufacturer,
located in Spotswood. O-I have be providing
will pass in the blink of an eye so can I say
to you all that we want you to do your best,
work hard between now and your final
assessments. I know you will finish your
year in the finest possible fashion but
please understand that we might seem hard
on you at times but it‟s all for a good
cause. Get in the habit over the holidays at
your practice exams and come back primed
for excellence next term.
The Habits of Mind
We are currently looking at the Habits of Mind
across the College.
The Habits of Mind are qualities and attributes you
possess that can help you behave intelligently when
confronted with problems. They can help guide you
in day to day life. They help solve problems and
they help give you skills and strategies to find
answers in everyday situations. There are 16 Habits
of Mind.
It is a goal of the College that all students identify
these Habits and begin to use them in their
everyday life so they can become successful
citizens of the future.
Stop Press: We received
our NAPLAN data for years 7 & 9
as this edition is going to press.
Very briefly we are really proud to
report that our average student
gains over the two years in
Reading, Writing, Spelling,
Grammar & Punctuation and
Numeracy are all greater than the
average gains in the state. This is
confirmation of our work in this
area, worthy of celebration.

Thank you to all the students and families
who were able to attend the Year 7-9 Student
College has been selected to participate in the
School for Student Leadership (Alpine School)
in 2012. The School for Student Leadership is
a Victorian Department of Education and Early
Childhood Development initiative offering a
unique residential education experience for
Year Nine students. The curriculum focuses on
personal development and the development of
a Community Learning Project. Six of our
current Year 8 students, three boys and three
girls, will have the opportunity to spend Term
3 (2012) at the Alpine School Campus, located
at Dinner Plains in the Victorian Alps.
Interested students will be selected on the basis
of a written application and subsequent
interview. Assemblies will be held in Term 4 to
present this opportunity to all students.
Students who are interested in partaking in this
rewarding opportunity are encouraged to speak
our Kings Park Campus.
By Ms. Dedes and Mr. Coloca
Welcome to our production of the „Castaways
of Coconut Isle.‟ The Copperfield College
motto is “one family, three homes” and this
year our production joins these homes into a
united family – on an island adventure! This
is a student focused project where
Copperfield College students are responsible
for all aspects of what you see. We have
student choreographers, students designing
and operating lighting and sound, students
running backstage, students singing, dancing,
acting and playing music. It‟s all about the
students and this is their show. They have
dedication, determination, commitment, made
personal sacrifices and worked hard.
The island didn‟t always look as it does now.
Our project started back in April and is the
result of 5 months work. My personal belief is
that everyone should be able to experience
and be involved in the performing arts. In
joining the three campuses of our school and
including students from Year 7 to 12, we
create a unique opportunity for students to be
‘Castaways of Coconut Isle.’
part of a large project. Each student you see
has a story and a journey and something they
want to contribute. The production is a team
and while all students experience personal
achievement, our success is as a team. It is
truly amazing to see the kindness,
consideration and caring attitudes of the
students as they overcome their own
insecurities to produce a professional
production.
We give special thanks to our year 12
students who have been involved and wish
them a lifetime of successes. To parents and
families, we thank-you for your support and
patience with long rehearsals and late nights.
For the cast and crew, you have survived the
curse, played to win and know that you make
us proud. In all aspects of your life don‟t be
afraid to “get on up” and follow your dreams.
Director
In Victoria education is compulsory
for children aged between 6 and 17.
When students are enrolled, it is
expected they will attend every day
of each term.
Parents will receive notification of
any student-free days.
It is crucial that students develop
habits of regular attendance at an
early age. This includes arriving at
school, and each class, on time.
Students who regularly miss days of
school are at risk of missing out on
learning the basic building blocks in
subjects, and may experience long
term difficulties with their learning.
School attendance helps students
develop social skills, such as
friendship building, team work,
communication skills and healthy
self-esteem.
An absence from school requires a
doctor’s certificate or note of
explanation that has been written
and signed by a parent/guardian.
The note should accompany the
student on the first day they
return to school after the absence.
If the absence is expected to be
longer than one day, please notify
the Student Attendance Officer at
your child’s campus.
Term 3 is well under way and our students
are firmly entrenched into their studies.
This term has seen our students change into
their new elective subjects for Semester 2 at
both Year 9 and 10 level. This seems to
have been a smooth transition, which is a
credit to both students and teachers.
On the 7 th of September, we had our
Student Led Presentations for Year 9, and
Course Confirmation for our Year 10s.
After much thought and discussion, most of
our Year 10s have now decided on their
subjects for VCE or VCAL and their
subsequent career paths. I wish you all the
best in your endeavors! From all reports,
there were some sensational Student Led
Presentations by the Year 9s. It is
particularly pleasing to see the amount of
preparation that has gone into these and to
see our students develop their confidence to
present to an audience. Well done!
In other areas of school life, our Year 9s
continue with their Challenge Day projects
and excursions. At this point, our classes
have conducted their surveys in the city and
are in the process of working together as a
group to present their findings. In term 4,
more excursions are planned and is reward
for the students efforts working individually
and together to overcome challenges.
The rugby Gala Day is run by Melbourne
Storm Development for year 7 and 8 girls and
boys.
The Year 8 girls‟ teams played „tag rugby‟.
The Year 8 team consisted of Kathleen Young,
Maryanne Latu, Oceanna Piilua, Terry
Matarao, Akima Garang, Linh Tran,
Youdanous Aregay, June Tuilagi, Pandora
Cook, Ana Vuletic, Kayla Power and Hannah
Au-Hau.
The girls played 4 matches with the following
results:
Kings Park v Craigieburn; 2-3 (loss)
Kings Park v Braybrook; 4-0 (win)
Kings Park v Vic Uni; 4-1 (win)
Kings Park v Sydenham; 4-0 (win)
The team then played off in the final, unfortunately being
defeated by a strong Craigieburn team, 3-0. However, they
are through to the finals of the Robbie Kearns Cup, to
defend their State Championship title from 2010, which
will be played later in the year.
Trys were scored by: Maryanne, 9; Akima, 2; June, 2 and
Terry, 1.
Our college sport program continues to be
well represented by C Team. Recently, a
number of students represented the College
needs to go out to Layla Karim, Paul Parker
and Belmin Ikanovic who have advanced to
the Western Metropolitan Athletics
Championships. An amazing achievement
and thanks for representing our college so
well.
At the time of writing, our Year 10s are just
about to depart for the Apple Isle. For
some, this is the first time interstate. For
others, it is the first time on a plane. This
promises to be an extremely exciting and
fun camp for all involved and the
excitement is slowly building up until the
last week of term. Among the highlights
will be a Port Arthur tour, a visit to the
Cadbury factory and a trip around the
Freycinet Peninsula.
Finally, I would like to congratulate our
students on their effort so far in Term 3. I
would like to encourage all C team students
to continue to wear the uniform well and
arrive to school and classes on time.
On the 1st of September I was fortunate enough
with 4 teams. They participated in puzzles,
problem solving tasks and games. I am very
proud to say “We WON”; with Copperfield
The year 9 and 10 Textiles students
their Textiles immersion experience. They
certainly had a great time going around the
showrooms. They had the opportunity to be
fashionistas for the day when they attended
the excursion wearing their best fashion
outfits. One student who stood out and
looked like a model herself was Maddison
The Environmental Leadership Team
The Environmental Leadership Team organised
a „Rubbish Free Lunch‟ day on Wednesday July
the 27 th . The teams‟ aims were to encourage
each student to place their rubbish in the bins
rather than on the floor or around the yard, to
determine what areas in the school need more
bins, to purchase new bins and bin holders,
which are sturdy and secure so that birds do not
get into them and bins don‟t get knocked over.
The team has been investigating these types of
issues to help eliminate schoolyard rubbish
which ends up down stormwater drains and
blown into our local community.
During the campaign students cleaned the yard
the day before the event and weighed 20.5kg of
student rubbish, which they thought, wasn‟t to
bad considering they expected more. On the day
of the 27 th of July students ate their lunch in
their classes 10 minutes before the lunch bell
sounded. Students were asked to place their
rubbish in the classroom bin rather than the
yard. Once outside the yard looked amazingly
clean and fresh. During period 4 students again
collected schoolyard rubbish weighing only
1.9kg, which confirms the event was a success.
Most students and our teachers believed it was a
great event and taught us to be more responsible
with our rubbish.
Our future plans are now to concentrate on the
areas that get lots of rubbish, get the bins out
their and keep working on more litter solutions.
Keep Australia Beautiful Finalist Award 2011
This year our Environmental Leadership Team participated in the Keep
Australia Beautiful Awards for recognition in their ability to get the
community to participate in environmental actions, which was their
annual conference. They were recognized for their efforts and hard work
and were presented with a finalist award. Well done to all the team
members for their persistence and dedication over the last 5 years.
Mathematics and Science Excellence Award 2011
This year the Environmental Leadership Team
applied for the Maths and Science Excellence
Award for their Kids Teaching Kids 2010 Sustainable
Schools Youth Conference. Last year
our enthusiastic and dedicated team members
organized and hosted an environmental conference
with other schools from our local Brimbank
City Council area. We had a vision and a goal to
do this and it was a fantastic day, approximately
110 students and 20 teachers attended the conference
held at Iramoo Sustainable Community
Centre at Vic Uni in St Albans, to teach each
other students about water and climate change
issues. Not only do our members participate in
conferences but many of the activities that our
ELT members have taken part in have become
part of the curriculum, including investigating
ecosystems and monitoring water and solar use.
Of our 30 initial members who founded the ELT
in 2007, all but three are now studying maths
and science subjects in their VCE year. Between
our members they have undertaken 26 science
units and 29 maths units. It was important for
our team to be recognized for their hard work
since 2007 and for there continued engagement
1.9kg on the Rubbish Free Lunch Day.
in maths and science. The award will allow our
students to organize and again host a two-day
conference inviting local schools and friendship
schools. This award not only belongs to our
students but to the many organizations who have
sponsored us such as; Onya Bottles, Bunning‟s
Warehouse, City West Water, Brimbank City
Council, Braybrook Hub, Iramoo, Kids Teaching
Kids and Australia Post.
2011 KTK Sustainable Schools Youth Conference:
On Tuesday the 30th of August Copperfield
College in partnership with Iramoo, Brimbank
City Council and Kids Teaching
Kids commenced our 2nd annual environmental
conference; 2011 Kids Teaching Kids
Sustainable Schools Youth Conference. The sun
was out, the birds were chirping and there was
not a cloud in sight. Around 200 students,
teachers and volunteers who all shared a similar
passion, making a change, attended. Linh Do a
Melbourne Uni student and a change maker in
her own right presented as a guest speaker. She
explained her passions to the students and how
she followed through with a small idea, from a
grassroots level to a „bill‟ in Parliament. She
initiated and planned the idea „change a million
light globes‟ – which meant people in Australia
could only buy energy effiecient light globes,
the time for change was now. Her idea was such
a great success that it has led her to talk to
student organized events, organizations and
business, explaining to them that anything is
possible, it‟s about the ability to persist, manage
and achieve one‟s own personal goals.
We also had Arron Wood, a pioneering
environmental campainger who was named
"Young Australian of the Year (Environment)"
in 2001 and won the United Nations' "Individual
Award for Outstanding Service to the
Environment" in 2006. He also won the "Prime
Minister's Environmentalist of the Year
Award" (Banksia Foundation) in 2007.
Arron studied Forestry at Melbourne University
and also worked within the water industry. He
then founded his own business "Fire starter Pty
Ltd." in 2000, an environmental communication
‘The Year of the Forest’
and education consultancy business. The
company connects the environmental
management industry with the greater
community, such as schools and companies.
Arron has also written a resource book for
teachers on kids teaching kids about the
environment and how the sense of place created
through genuine involvement of young
people can be used to build healthy
communities.
The day involved Copperfield College‟s
Environmental Leadership Team from across
the 3 families (Del, KP and Syd) to organize
and host this event. We invited 7 other
schools whom attended and presented their
own workshop, teaching other fellow
students about forests and their ecosystems
from all around the globe. Students were
treated to muffins and a sausage sizzle before
they completed their last workshops. Upon
conclusion of the event, representatives from
each school presented a school environmental
pledge, placing their leaf onto the „Pledge
Tree‟. With every conference and workshop
that kids attend and present to the knowledge
base increases and the ripple effect of
environmental sustainability continues.
Copperfield College plans to expand the
conference next year, going above and
beyond their initial expectations. Students
are preparing to meet with a number of notfor-profit
organizations and individuals to
further develop next years conference.
Since the middle of last year we have collected 256
mobile phones, which we have kindly sent to the
Melbourne Zoo to help with their „Gorilla - They‟re
‘Nike Shoe: Reuse a Shoe’
The Year 9 students in the
Environmental Leadership
Team are taking part in the
„Nike Shoe: Reuse a Shoe‟
recycling campaign. This
campaign consists of
recycling old, unwanted or
damaged athletic shoes that
will end up in our landfill.
The athletic shoes will be
collected and sent to the Nike
store once placed in the
recycle bin, found at the
Administration Office at the
Sydenham Campus. The
athletic shoes are sent to the
Nike head office to be broken
up into „Nike Grind‟ which is
rubber, foam and fiber that
will be further turned into
buttons, zipper pulls and
cushioning for the use of
indoor and outdoor sports
flooring which is used
throughout the world. Please
make sure that the athletic
shoes that are placed in our
bin are clean.
By Celene Tang, Neha Ram
& the Yr 9 team members.
P a g e
We have partnered with „Battery
World - Recycling‟. Battery
World offers the only national
opportunity to recycle
responsibly by disposing dead
domestic batteries at our College.
The batteries that we as a Team
are recycling are: A, AA, AAA,
C, D, 9V and 4V batteries, laptop
batteries and camera batteries.
This will be an ongoing initiative
and will be occurring across all 3
campuses. We are encouraging
as many people to recycle these
batteries so that they do not end
up in landfill and harm the
environment by leaking out
heavy metals.

This year marked the 25 th anniversary of
the Victorian Youth Parliament.
Copperfield College sent a team of six
students to participate in the program.
The team included Kadir Kaya, Claudia
Ralevski, Maja Kotevski, Jake Mclean,
Steph Tedesco and Kiera Riley.
Youth Parliament (or parli as participants‟
call it) is for anyone between the ages 16-
25. It is a YMCA program aimed at giving
youth an opportunity to be heard in a public
forum. Each team wrote a bill (proposed
legislation) on a topic they were passionate
about. We then debated the bills in
Victorian Parliament House. This year there
were 20 teams with 120 people from
schools, universities and youth groups
participating. The program was comprised
of a training weekend/camp and then a
whole week stay in the mid-semester
holidays from the 10 th till the 15 th of July.
The Bill was about same-sex marriage. The
aim was to legalise marriage for any two
consenting adults, thus it was titled “Non-
Heterosexual Marriage” to give everyone
equal rights. The bill was written with the
assistance of our Mentor from the YMCA
and Miss Keti. We researched same-sex
marriage, homophobia and current
Victorian marriage laws. The team and
Miss Keti met once a week to prepare
arguments and speeches. The Copperfield
team went above and beyond expectations
by starting our own petition. We took to the
streets in Melbourne gathering almost 600
signatures in only a few hours. It was an
indication of how many people support
legalising non-heterosexual marriage.
On Friday the 10 th to Sunday the 12 th of
June we attended a training camp at
Bacchus Marsh. The time spent at the
campsite was divided into two parts, Wreck
and Training. In Training we learnt about
the legislative process and procedure we
had to follow in parliament house. Wreck
(recreation) is all about crazy, fun activities.
Wreck enabled us to build friendships with
the other participants and gave us a chance
to relax. At first The Copperfield team was
confused by all the singing and crazy
games. We quickly learnt to just join in, no
matter how weird it seemed. We then found
ourselves having unimaginable fun and
meeting amazing, loud and inspiring young
people.
The Wreck Team organised a nerd party
and everyone wore costumes including big
glasses, high socks, buttoned up shirts,
ankle freezer pants and everything else
nerdy that you can imagine. We played a
wacky trivia game that resulted in many
challenges including Stephanie Tedesco
having to put play-dough all over her face
and sing The Big Bang theme song in
French!
The Training Crew taught us the etiquette
of parliament house including addressing
The Speaker and interjections . We were
prepared to handle questions from
journalists and taught how to get our voices
heard in the local media. Kadir was elected
to be our Media representative. Teams were
grouped together to form the government
and the opposition. Copperfield formed part
of the government with 10 other teams and
we were given Dromana Secondary as our
opposition.
The Copperfield Youth Parliament Team
was featured in The Brimbank Weekly, a
local newspaper. We were also given the
opportunity to talk about our bill on local
radio. Kadir and Maja spoke very
confidently on the radio and really enjoyed
the experience.
When parli week finally arrived we
couldn‟t have been more excited. A whole
week away from home with 3 days in
parliament house! We started the week off
with our „monster under the bed‟ costume
party. It was fun dressing up, with Jake
Mclean as a scary puppet and Steph as the
sock monster. The next day was our first
day at parliament house.
Nerd Party costumes
Our bill was
the very first to be introduced and we were
all very nervous to speak. We were
allocated to the Legislative Assembly and
the atmosphere was amazing. Stephanie and
I were lucky enough to be seated as front
benchers which felt even more special.
Despite our nerves everyone spoke
extremely well. Stephanie was jaw
Youth Parliament 2011
Monster under the bed party
dropping as she gave her 5minute sponsor
speech. Maja spoke with confidence and
clarity. Kadir was passionate and his speech
raised many valid points in support of our
bill. Jake was very well spoken, leaving the
opposition almost speechless with little
room to refute his arguments. Claudia was
exceptional and was praised by The
Speaker for her rebuttal skills. Our bill was
passed unanimously and then sent to the
relevant minister for consideration. Many
bills passed by Youth parliament have
become laws in Victoria.
The Minister of Education, Mr Peter Dixon
came especially to see our team debate
Dromana‟s bill (starting school at 10
o‟clock and finishing at 4pm).
Copperfield‟s arguments raised so many
valid points that we were successful in
convincing the other parliamentarians to
vote against the bill. The Copperfield team
spoke to The Minister afterwards who was
amazed that students had defeated a bill that
could enable us all to sleep in! A highlight
was the chance to make our own
adjournment speeches. All 120 participants
had our debates recorded in Hansard which
is special as many members of parliament
have not been recorded in Hansard.
We were invited to Government House for
afternoon tea. Getting to meet the Victorian
Governor, Alex Chernov was very exciting
and we were lucky enough to have a photo
with him. Government House was
indescribable. The art, historical furniture
and an exquisite ballroom made it
unforgettable The rest of the week
consisted of more Wreck activities
including our own amazing race which
ended in a massive paint and slime fight.
On the final night we had a super-hero
party where we all danced the night
away. By the end of the week we had
made many new friends including the
fantastic task force. The whole
experience was mind opening and
changed our perspective of life. The
program developed our public speaking
skills. An English oral in class is now
less daunting when compared to
speaking in Parliament House. We
all got something different out of the
program and would recommend it to
everyone. Following our time at Youth
Parliament our team was featured in the
Star newspaper and was also invited to
morning tea with our local Member of
Parliament, Natalie Hutchins to discuss
what is important to us.
