<strong>Australian</strong> port activity<br />

Overview<br />

This chapter shows activities in <strong>Australian</strong> ports from 2001–02. It covers total throughput and<br />

ship activities in each state/territory, total throughput and ship activities at major <strong>Australian</strong><br />

ports. It also demonstrates ship activities by other characteristics such as ship type and<br />

ship size.<br />

Data source<br />

The total throughput figures include the tonnage of international <strong>sea</strong> <strong>freight</strong> that is derived<br />

from the international <strong>sea</strong> <strong>freight</strong> data obtained from ABS, and tonnage of domestic (coastal)<br />

<strong>freight</strong> that is surveyed by the BITRE. The vessel movement information used to <strong>report</strong> ship<br />

activity is data obtained from Lloyd’s List Intelligence (LLI).<br />
