In 2010–11, a total of 1 077.0 million tonnes of cargo moved across Australian wharves.
This represented a 2.3 per cent increase on the previous financial year. The average annual
growth over the five-year period since 2005–06 was 6.2 per cent.
International exports represented 81.8 per cent of this cargo, while international imports
and coastal freight (includes loaded and discharged coastal cargo) represented 8.6 and
9.6 per cent respectively.
International exports and imports by sea
Total international cargo handled by Australian ports increased 14.2 per cent, by value, and
increased 2.7 per cent, by weight, between 2009–10 and 2010–11. Over the five-year term
since 2005–06, the average annual growth was 8.3 and 7.3 per cent for the total value and total
weight of international cargo, respectively.
In 2010–11, Australia’s exports by sea were $222.6 billion, a 24.4 per cent increase on
2009–10 and an average annual growth of 10.7 per cent over the last five years. The weight
of exports increased from 2009–10 by 2.2 per cent to 881.3 million tonnes, and the average
annual growth over the last five years was 7.7 per cent.
Australia’s imports by sea were 92.1 million tonnes worth $160.9 billion in 2010–11. The value
of imports increased 2.5 per cent between 2009–10 and 2010–11 and increased 5.5 per cent
per annum over the last five years. The weight of imports increased 7.6 per cent from 2009–10
and the average annual growth was 4.2 per cent over the last five years.
Coastal freight
Australian ports handled 103.6 million tonnes of coastal freight during 2010–11, compared to
104.8 million tonnes in 2009–10, and 110.3 million tonnes five years ago. This decline in recent
years is mainly due to the reduction in the domestic movement of crude oil products.
Measured in tonne-kilometre terms (tonnes of cargo loaded times the distance shipped),
the freight task of loaded coastal cargo was 111.0 billion tonne-kilometres, as compared to
114.8 billion tonne-kilometres one year ago and 122.3 billion tonne-kilometres five years ago.
