From 1985 to 2010<br />

The <strong>European</strong> Capitals <strong>of</strong> Culture is a flagship cultural<br />

initiative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> <strong>Union</strong>, possibly <strong>the</strong> bestknown<br />

and most appreciated by <strong>European</strong> citizens.<br />

The programme is a clear illustration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EU’s<br />

commitment to cultural diversity, and also <strong>of</strong> how<br />

culture can unite people within Europe. The Capitals<br />

have provided an opportunity for <strong>European</strong>s to meet,<br />

to learn about <strong>the</strong>ir diversity, but at <strong>the</strong> same time to<br />

enjoy toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ir common history and values and<br />

to cooperate in new initiatives and projects: in o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

words, to experience <strong>the</strong> feeling <strong>of</strong> belonging to <strong>the</strong><br />

same <strong>European</strong> community.<br />
