The <strong>European</strong> statistical system (ESS) has to provide<br />
policymakers as well as <strong>the</strong> general public within<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> <strong>Union</strong> with high-quality statistics.<br />
A basic legal framework, in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a regulation<br />
on <strong>European</strong> statistics, has been established in<br />
order to ensure <strong>the</strong> efficient functioning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ESS<br />
for that purpose.<br />
This publication aims to describe <strong>the</strong> main<br />
components <strong>of</strong> that legal framework, also emphasising<br />
some tools which are <strong>of</strong> particular importance for <strong>the</strong><br />
response <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ESS to future challenges.<br />
