European guidelines for quality
assurance in colorectal cancer
screening and diagnosis
First edition
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common newly
diagnosed cancer in Europe and the second most
common cause of cancer deaths. In the 27 Member
States of the EU, approximately 330 000 new cases
and 150 000 deaths occur each year. Many of these
deaths could be avoided through early detection, by
making effective use of screening tests followed by
appropriate treatment.
These guidelines aim to point out the need for
appropriate quality assurance at all levels when
performing CRC screening.
European guidelines for quality
assurance in cervical cancer
screening
Second edition
Currently about 34 000 new cases and over 16 000
deaths due to cervical cancer are reported annually in
the European Union
Screening for cytological abnormalities and treatment
of precursor lesions has contributed significantly to
the substantial decline in cervical cancer incidence
and mortality rates in Europe over recent decades.
Improvements in the control of cervical cancer have
been particularly discernible in those countries
which have implemented population-based
screening programmes with a high acceptance of
personal invitations.
