Chapter 4 -In case of injury<br />
What to do<br />
Immediately<br />
1. Provide first aid treatment.<br />
Remember to document what happened and what<br />
first aid was provided.<br />
2. Arrange for transportation to a hospital,<br />
doctor’s office or the worker’s home, if<br />
required.<br />
The employer is responsible for arranging and paying<br />
for any transportation costs to get the employee<br />
medical treatment.<br />
3. Pay the worker’s wages for the day of the<br />
injury.<br />
WSIB benefits begin the day after the injury.<br />
Once the worker is looked after<br />
4. Review what happened and look for causes.<br />
■ What caused the accident<br />
■ lack of training<br />
■ faulty equipment<br />
■ slippery floor<br />
■ failure to use safe work practices<br />
■ improper handling of dangerous materials.<br />

5. Follow up to avoid similar injuries in future.<br />
Take necessary actions to<br />
■ identify and arrange for required safety training<br />
■ repair or replace any faulty equipment<br />
■ keep worksite cleaner in future<br />
■ identify any work processes that need to<br />
be changed<br />
6. Begin to plan for the worker’s return to work.<br />
Information about what the worker can and<br />
cannot do during recovery (called functional abilities)<br />
will help you bring him/her back to work as soon as<br />
possible without risk of further injury.<br />
■ Consider if it would be useful for the<br />
worker to get functional abilities information<br />
from the treating health care provider.<br />
■ Consider arranging modified duties where<br />
practical.<br />
When to report<br />
When to report injuries and illnesses<br />
REPORT if the injury/illness causes the<br />
worker to…<br />
■ get health care treatment,* or<br />
■ lose time from regular work, or<br />
■ earn less than regular pay for regular work or<br />
■ require modified work at less than regular<br />
pay or<br />
■ require modified work at regular pay for<br />
more than seven calendar days.<br />
Workers have six months from the date of injury or<br />
onset of illness to claim benefits.<br />
DO NOT REPORT if the worker…<br />
■ only needs first aid,* or<br />
■ receives first aid and goes back immediately<br />
to modified work at regular pay for up to seven<br />
calendar days from the time of the injury, or<br />
■ does not receive first aid but requires modified work<br />
at regular pay for up to seven calendar days from the<br />
time of the injury.<br />

Employers – it is your responsibility<br />
to report to the WSIB within 3 days of<br />
learning about the injury. There are<br />
fines for late reporting.<br />

For fatal or critical injuries, notify the Ministry of Labour immediately.<br />
