Chapter 5 -Getting your worker better and back to work
Other services we have
Return to work mediators
Our experienced mediators are trained to act as a
neutral/impartial third party to help you resolve return to
work problems. The goal of mediation is to assist the
workplace parties to make their own suitable, safe and
early return to work arrangements that are appropriate to
their workplace.
Mediation is an established and proven process used by
countless private and public organizations to resolve
disputes.
Ergonomists
When needed, a WSIB ergonomist will look at the job to
be done and the functional abilities of the worker. Based
on his/her analysis the ergonomist can suggest job or
workplace modifications that may allow the worker to
return to the job safely.
Ergonomists can also make recommendations about the
suitability of a job.
Information you will need – functional abilities
Identifying what your worker can do while recovering
(called functional abilities) will help you get your worker
back to work safely and as early as possible.
■ The worker must agree to the release of
functional abilities information to you for
benefits to be paid.
■ The worker consents to the release of
functional abilities information when applying
for benefits.
The optional Functional Abilities Form (2674A),
completed by the worker's health care professional,
will help you and your worker plan the return to
work. You may use your own form if you choose.
But the WSIB only pays health care professionals for
completing the WSIB form.
For more information on the Functional Abilities
Form and the worker's consent please refer to Frequently
Asked Questions or call your account manager.
Return to work consulting service
As well, small employers may get additional consultation
services on developing and implementing an effective
return to work plan from the Office of the Employer
Adviser. Reach them by calling toll free 1-800-387-0774
or, in the Toronto area, 416-327-0020.
When an early and safe return to work
does not occur
If a return to work does not result, the WSIB will provide
the worker with a labour market re-entry (LMR)
assessment and, if necessary, a labour market re-entry
plan. The costs for these services will be charged on your
Schedule 2 invoice.
