Genuine Yamaha oil filters Genuine Yamaha oil filters are the result of careful research and development efforts taking all these conditions into consideration. As a leading manufacturer of motorcycles, Yamaha has set forth very strict standards with regard to the filtration power of the filter paper, the quality of the adhesives, the spring pressure of the relief valve, etc. Only products of high-quality materials and sophisticated assembly technology are offered to the market as genuine Yamaha oil filters. An oil filter prevents infiltration of foreign matter into the engine An engine is an easy victim of fouling due to combustion in the combustion chamber and movement of engine parts. Impurities in the fuel and oil can easily turn into sludge and friction between the cylinder and piston rings can create fine metallic powder. This fouling is washed away by engine oil so that the engine can maintain its normal function. However, since engine oil is used continuously over a long period of time before the next periodic renewal, the sludge and metallic powder are often released back into the engine. Oil must be protected from deterioration due to repeated fouling. The oil filter is designed to prevent refouling of the engine and deterioration of engine oil due to fouling, thereby prolonging the oil’s life as much as possible. Various conditions that affect oil filter Engine oil is subjected to a large load when the engine is running resulting in a rise in both oil pressure and temperature. The oil temperature sometimes rises to as high as 150°C in a high-rev type engine. Since the oil filter is exposed directly to extreme pressure and temperature, high resistance against oil and heat is required of oil filters. When the engine oil is still new, oxides created by sludge are neutralized by neutralizing agents and other additives in the engine oil thereby maintaining the oil’s original performance. Therefore, effects upon the oil filter are kept within the design data. After the oil has been used over a long period of time, however, it loses some of its neutralizing power and the oxides tend to remain in the oil. These oxides have harsh effects on the filter paper, gasket, adhesive and other elements of the oil filter. For instance, the original filtration power is seriously damaged by melting of the adhesive, carbonizing and decomposition of the filter paper, etc. In the worst case, the decomposed adhesive and filter paper clogs lubrication paths which, in turn, can lead to a seized engine. Construction of genuine Yamaha oil filters (4X7-13440-90) An oil filter has a relatively simple design and is made up of a plate, element, adhesive, gasket, and relief valve. Filter paper The filter paper is folded many times to maximize the effective filtration area. (In the case of 4X7, the filtration area is over 420cm2 with 40+2 folds and the effective filtration area is over 380cm2.) In addition, two-ply paper is used to prevent clogging. The filter paper is made coarse on the surface and fine on the reverse so that s e r v i c i n g larger particles are trapped on the surface and finer ones are caught deeper in the paper. The filter paper is joined firmly by metal fasteners to prevent oil leakage. Gasket The gasket is a seal to completely channel the fouled oil to the element. It is made of rubber to prevent oil leakage. Adhesive Adhesive is used to join the metallic plate, punching metal and element firmly. It is made of high-quality material having a very high bonding strength, resistance against temperatures above 150°C, and resistance against melting due to oxides. Relief valve The relief valve remains idle during normal use of the oil filter. When the element becomes clogged after long use and the engine oil loses its lubricating power, it serves as a bypass mechanism for the engine oil to protect the engine from seizure and other problems.
