PASTORAL CARE
The pastoral care at Durlston is one of its many strengths. We work hard
to keep communication between home and school open to ensure that we
all work together for the benefit and well-being of our pupils.
When a pupil enters the school, we ask Parents to complete a medical
questionnaire. Any health or dietary problems are notified to staff and
they are kept informed of any changes. Medicines may be brought in to
our Reception staff to administer, provided that they are clearly labelled.

information booklet 2011/2012
Any special dietary needs may be discussed with our Catering Manager,
whether they be ongoing or just while a child is recovering from illness.
We do urge Parents to keep us informed of any home issues that
might affect their children at school, such as a sick pet or a poorly relative.
If a pupil is ill at school we notify Parents as soon as possible and arrange
for them to be collected, if appropriate.
HOUSE SYSTEM Years 3 - 8
Durlston Court has a thriving House system, which underpins the
discipline system and engenders a sense of team spirit. The four
houses are named after our Patron Saints.
When children join the school, they will be allocated to one of
the four Houses: St. George, St. Andrew, St. Patrick, or St. David.
Although the Form Teacher will have the major pastoral responsibility
for your child, “House Staff” will also take a keen interest in his/her
welfare. We encourage children to feel able to approach any member of
staff, all of whom will be happy to help.
PUPIL RECORD BOOK Years 3 - 8
Prep is set daily and is recorded in the Pupil Record Book. The amount
will depend upon the age of the child. Prep. may be completed at
school under supervision between 4.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m., or may
be taken home to complete as homework. Each pupil is issued with
a Pupil Record Book at the beginning of the academic year. The Pupil
record Book aids children with their organisation and acts as a means of
communication between Parents and the school.
COMMUNICATION
Parent / Teacher Meetings
These are held for each year group, annually. Parents receive written
notification in advance, and upon receipt of a reply slip receive personal
appointments with Staff.
Although these represent a formal opportunity to discuss a child’s
progress, it is hoped that all parents feel able to make regular contact
with their child’s teachers. We want you to feel as involved as you wish
to be in your child’s education.
Reports
Pre-Prep
Reports are issued at the end of each term.
Senior School
Senior School pupils receive an Academic Review Card giving grades
for effort and attainment each half term and at the end of the Spring
Term. Full written reports are issued at the end of the Autumn and
Summer Terms.
The School Calendar / Newsletter / Durlstonian /
Clarion Call / The School Website
A school calendar is sent to all parents each term. The calendar shows
events and fixtures for the coming term. Changes and updates are
shown on the school web site.
A weekly newsletter is produced to keep parents up to date with
Durlston News.
The school also publishes an annual school magazine known as
the Durlstonian.
Clarion call is a web based messaging system that we use to notify
Parents of emergency messages. For example, you may receive a
text message: Tonight’s Hockey Club has been cancelled, please let
us know if you wish to collect your children at 4.30 pm. Or you may
receive a text message asking you to ring a number where you will
hear a voice mail message from a member of staff e.g. The French
Trip has arrived safely. We are all well. The system uses mobile
telephones as the way of contact and it is therefore important that
Parents keep us up to date with any changes of number. Usually texts
are send to one Parent (usually Mum) but the system can be set up to
send messages to both Parents if preferred.
Our school website contains a huge amount of information and is
constantly being updated. There is a Parents’ area which can be
accessed by inserting a password. This area includes changes to the
calendar/fixtures. Our weekly Newsletter is loaded on there each week
and there is plenty of other information including School Policies and
details of Parents’ Association and School Functions etc.
INSTRUMENTAL TUITION Yrs 3 - 8
All pupils receive weekly music lessons with Mr. Harrison, Director of
Music, in the Music School. In addition, the school also offers tuition in
the following disciplines to pupils from Years 2 – 8:
Violin, Cello, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet,
Euphonium, Trombone, Horn in F, Tenor Horn, Tuba, Percussion,
Recorder, Piano and Organ.
Individual Music Tuition is £160 per term (based on 10 lessons.)
We have three Choirs, an Orchestra, Jazz Band, Wind Band, Guitar
Group, Hand bells Group, String Group, Brass Group, Clarinet, Flute
and Recorder ensembles and Percussion group. All pupils learning
an instrument are encouraged to take part in these groups. Theory of
Music is taught to all pupils, but those needing more than a general
knowledge are encouraged to have individual lessons.
Pupils are prepared for the public examinations of the Associated
Board of the Royal Schools of Music (both practical and theory) for
which the school is a centre.
All children are encouraged to perform, whether it is in class or in the
formal and informal concerts, which are held regularly at school.

information booklet 2011/2012
PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
The school has a thriving Parents’ Association, which organises
regular fund raising and social events. Each year group has a Parent
Representative, who keeps parents informed of social events inside and
outside school.
SCHOOL MINIBUS SERVICES
The school runs six Mini Buses covering The Bournemouth, Ringwood,
Lyndhurst, Burton, Bransgore, Burley, Brockenhurst, Tiptoe, Sway,
Lymington, Beaulieu and Sowley areas.
CATERING
Durlston is very proud of its excellent catering department. Our Catering Manager, Mike Turner, is a very experienced Chef. He has a 2nd Chef
and 4 kitchen assistants in his department. We always promote a healthy balanced diet. Our catering and teaching staff work in partnership to
encourage children to have a good nutritional intake.
Our Menus are on a four weekly cycle (changed each term) and these can be downloaded from our website. All our food is freshly prepared and
made on the premises. There is always a choice of two hot dishes (one of them vegetarian) and fresh vegetables. There is a ‘daily special’, a full
salad bar, homemade puddings and a choice of fresh fruit and yoghurts.
At morning and afternoon break the children have a snack and a drink. We cater for pupils who have special dietary needs and Mike is always
pleased to hear from parents, pupils and staff with new menu ideas to try.
