I want to thank you for you generous
donation of magazines for my
LH/GENE DAY. They arrived on
Thursday last week. It was a great
success and attendees were also
grateful for the magazine. Hopefully
it will generate subscriptions
for you. We take it here at the library
and want to compliment you on the
quality of the magazine. It is one of
the best genealogy magazines we
take here in the library and I look
forward to every issue. I especially
look for Jeff Bockman’s articles since
I do know him. He was our keynote
speaker for our program a couple of
years ago and was keynote speaker
at my genealogy group’s workshop
last year.
I am nearly 89 years old, Last Saturday
while at the small Atlanta
Center Cemetery in Saline County,
Nebraska, near the town of Milligan,
the caretakers asked about two
graves marked by cement markers
which my elderly uncle, Albert
Herndon, had placed to mark the
graves of a woman and a child who
died ca 1882 or 1883. This was done
in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The
caretakers would like to learn more
about the family to add to the history
of the cemetery. The graves are
in the lot owned by my great uncle,
Austin Sinclair Herndon.
The following story about the
family is as told to me when I was
a child:
In 1882 or 1883, a Mr. and Mrs.
McMahan were traveling west when
Mrs. McMahan became ill. I think
she had pneumonia and then died
in childbirth. The daughter lived for
a time. I do not know for how long,
but they were buried in separate
graves. My grandmother took care
of them. The husband and father
continued on the journey after his
wife’s death. I do not remember if
there were other children, and think
there were not.
My grandmother, Jane Herndon
(Mrs. Charles M. Herndon) kept in
touch with Mr. McMahan for a time,
I think. It is not known today if they
were friends before or just travelers
on the way west. There is no record
of a family connection. It is not
known how far west the family was
planning to go or why.
Any help would be appreciated,
What happened to genealogyblog.
com The feeds have stopped, and
the website gives me an error... Are
you blogging elsewhere now
TG
Ans: This may sound crazy—but
I don’t know what happened to it.
Joe Edmon (who now lives in Honolulu)
had 100 percent administrative
control of both of my blogs.
Since he and I started them together,
I didn’t imagine that it would ever
be a problem. Anyway—something
went wrong. They went down and
after I flew to Honolulu and talked
with Joe, they were up again for
about three days... then down again.
A few days ago, he gave me my admin
rights and full ownership of the
name Genealogyblog.com—with no
communication whatsoever. So, I’m
still badgering him for the data, but I
think he must have done something
that caused him to lose it entirely—
and he doesn’t want to tell me, as it’s
about five years of my life.
The long and the sort of it is that
I think I will be forced to start over.
The blogs will be the same titles—
genealogyblog.com and germangenealogyblog.com.
I really don’t
want to start over, but I may have no
choice. I will have the blogs up and
running soon, one way or another.
