Paid Submissions Articles and stories selected for publication will be paid as shown below. Feature Articles 1000–3000 words. Request Writer’s Guidelines for rates and instructions. Information and advice that increases genealogical knowledge and research skills. Relatively Speaking 100–300 words. We pay $10. Compelling short stories, poetry (can be shorter), or vignettes about family or family history research experiences. We look for serendipity, humor, surprise, and unusual twists in this section. Ancestor Stories for the Soul 750–1000 words. We pay $25. Inspirational, uplifting, healing, or motivational real life experiences resulting from family history work. Breaking Through 1000–1500 words. We pay $50. Success stories or case studies explaining how someone broke through a “brick wall” in their research. Non-Paid Submissions Letters to the Editor News to Peruse 100 words or less. News briefs and headlines that affect genealogists such as: calls for papers, awards, records releases, record closures, exhibits, discoveries, etc. Please include the source (name of publication or URL) and date the information was printed. Queries—Bureau of Missing Ancestors For the Free Everton’s Online Ancestor/Roots Cellar Search, fill out the form at the beginning of the Queries—Bureau of Missing Ancestors section or submit at www.everton.com/qna/question form. php. Details are included in the Query section of the Helper. On the Horizon Upcoming local and national genealogy events that would be of interest to our readers. Entries are accepted up to six weeks before the next issue of the magazine. Keep in mind that the further in advance you submit your event, the more likely it will be printed. Beginner’s Corner 300–1500 words. How-to articles designed to help the beginning researcher get off to a quick start. Society Highlight 700 words or less. Short account of a genealogical society’s activities or a description of an up-and-coming society and the benefits of membership. Special Collections Highlight 300–1500 words. Introduction or highlight of a library, archive, museum, or other repository and its specific outstanding collection relative to family history and genealogical research. May also focus on unusual and new exhibits. Quick Tips 300 words or less. Short tips on organization, preservation, time management, skills to develop, etc. Website Highlight 300–1500 words. Introduces or highlights an outstanding website on the Internet of interest to family history research. Verify the URL of the site, identify the site’s owner, and describe the extent and quality of the information it provides. Please include: • Website name and complete URL • Name of website owner and contact information • Description of information available, benefits, and cost of subscription if applicable Software Highlight 300–1500 words. Description of software for genealogists. Please include: • Full name of the software (include version) • Name of manufacturer and release date • Cost and place where the software can be purchased • Level of expertise and system requirements • A complete description that will help readers decide whether or not the software would be affordable, helpful, and practical for their use. Computer Tips 100–500 words. Helpful information on using the Internet, computers, or programs—as simple as a series of keystrokes or as complex as scanning and archiving old articles. On the Bookshelf Send us a copy of your genealogical or local history book and we will list it in this magazine along with the information you provide. We may add our comments or edit yours, if we deem it necessary. Do not expect critical reviews in this publication. There are numerous scholarly periodicals that can do that for you. Send your book to the Book Editor, The Genealogical Helper, PO Box 830, Bountiful, UT 84011. Then, send an email attachment to leland@everton.com with the title, author, copyright date, physical dimensions, number of pages, hard or soft cover, index or none, item number (if any), and ISBN (if any), cost of book, shipping cost, and location where the book can be purchased, and finally a full description of the book — in that order. Include your website as well as physical address if applicable. Books received will be placed in the Everton Library Collection in Logan, Utah upon publication of the announcement. CD-Rom Reviews Send us your genealogical or local history CD-ROM and we will do a thorough review of the electronic publication, publishing the review in this section of The Genealogical Helper.
