The will abstracts in this
volume, 1749-1790, are based
on the oldest Mecklenburg County wills of record, as
well as upon the extant returns of wills and estates
of the North Carolina Secretary of State. While the
length and contents of these abstracts vary, most of
them provide the name of the testator, date of the
will, names and relationships of all heirs to the estate
(sometimes with ages given or inferred), contents of
the estate, names of executors, and, usually, the date
of probate.

Caswell County, North
Carolina was created from Orange County in 1777,
and is today adjacent to Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
Mrs. Kendall has abstracted all 5,700 extant
marriage bonds for Caswell County from 1778, the
date of the earliest bond, to 1868, when North Carolina
changed the requirements of its marriage law.
Each entry herein identifies the bride and groom, the
date of the bond, and the name of the bondsman or
witness. Contains a name index to brides, grooms,
bondsmen, witnesses, and other persons named in
the bonds.

These agricultural census records name only the
head of the household; however, they do yield unique
information about how people lived. Often, individuals
who were missed on the regular U.S. census will
appear on the agricultural census. Six of the agricultural
census’s original 48 columns are transcribed
here: name of owner, improved acreage, unimproved
acreage, cash value of farm, value of farm implements
and machinery, and value of livestock. This volume
covers the counties of: Alamance, Alexander, Anson,
Ashe, Beaufort, Bertie, Bladen, Brunswick, Buncombe,
Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Camden, and Carteret. A
surname index augments the records.
